For large deformations, the governing equations of elastic-plastic flow may lose their hyperbolicity and become ill posed at some critical values of the hardening modulus. This ill-posedness is characterized by uncontrolled growth of the amplitude of plane wave solutions in certain directions. To capture post-critical…

PbS microcrystallites show strong quantum confinement effects on account of the fact that the particle size is much smaller than the exciton Bohr radius, leading to large blue shifts of the optical absorption edge and the transverse optical phonon frequencies. In addition, femtosecond pump-probe experiments find a tra…

Motivated by difficulties in understanding the magnetism of the insulating parent of high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ supeconductors, we have studied the less covalent, and thus simpler, antiferromagnetic (AF) insulators NiO and ${\mathrm{KNiF}}_{3}$. We also consider the apparently covalent material ${\mathrm{La}}_{2…

Femtosecond pump-probe experiments performed on squaraines demonstrate strong couplings between the first excited state and high-lying two-photon states. The experimental data agree well with our earlier quantum many-electron calculations based on multiple-excited configuration interactions. We show that high-lying tw…

The kinetics of the reaction of directionally solidified eutec‐tics of yttrium‐aluminum perovskite and alumina to yttrium‐aluminum garnet were measured between 1150° and 1550°C for times as long as 20 000 min. Deformation from the 11 vol% increase was observed. Samples were characterized by optical microscopy, SEM, an…

Liquid crystalline properties of the four families with the general formula: where X = NO2, Cl, Br, F, have been investigated. Among these compounds nematic, smectic A and smectic B mesophases were found. These phase situations are compared with the isomeric families with the reversed -N=CH- central group.

This paper is concerned with formulating and evaluating a model of tongue tear. The modeling approach taken is fairly general, and results recorded to this point have been encouraging. Although predicting tearing behavior from parameters determined prior to weaving is not yet possible, the implications of this work ar…

Abstract In order to examine the spectra of films formed during the polarization of an Fe–17 Cr alloy in 0.5 M sulphuric acid, it is necessary to separate the overlapping spectral components of the film and substrate. The procedure for peak separation and background subtraction as proposed by Hansen and Tougaard was f…

Expression of the sdaCB operon is…

Protons in some alkaline earth metal‐phosphate glasses are much more mobile than monovalent ions such as Na + and Ag + ions under a dc electrical field. The O‐H bonding in those glasses that is weakened by the strong hydrogen bonding with neighboring nonbridging oxygen ions may cause the mobile protons.
