Electric-field switching of exciton spin splitting in coupled quantum dots

Xiaojing Li、Kai Chang2008-06-12arXiv

We investigate theoretically the spin splitting of the exciton states in semiconductor coupled quantum dots (CQDs) containing a single magnetic ion. We find that the spin splitting can be switched on/off in the CQDs \textit{via} the \textit{sp-d}exchange interaction using the electric field. An interesting bright-to-d…

Room temperature soft ferromagnetism in the nanocrystalline form of YCo2 - a well-known bulk Pauli paramagnet

S. Narayana Jammalamadaka、E. V. Sampathkumaran、V. Satya Narayana Murthy 等 4 位作者2008-06-12arXiv

The Laves phase compound, YCo2, is a well-known exchange-enahnced Pauli paramagnet. We report here that, in the nanocrystalline form, this compound interestingly is an itinerant ferromagnet at room temperature with a low coercive-field. The magnitude of the saturation moment (about 1 Bohr-magneton per formula unit) is…

Chemical Preparation and Structural Characterization of a Homogeneous Series of Chitin/Chitosan Oligomers

Stéphane Trombotto、Catherine Ladavière、Frédéric Delolme 等 4 位作者2008-06-12Biomacromolecules

The preparation of a homogeneous series of chitin/chitosan oligomers (chito-oligomers) with the same distribution of degrees of polymerization (DP) ranging from 2 to 12, but with various average degrees of N-acetylation (DA) from 0 to 90% is described. This DA-series was obtained according to a two-step chemical proce…

Enhanced surface-excitonic emission in ZnO/Al2O3 core–shell nanowires

J.‐P. Richters、T. Voss、D S Kim 等 5 位作者2008-06-12Nanotechnology

We report the influence of an Al(2)O(3) shell on the photoluminescence emission of ZnO nanowires. At room temperature, the spectrum of the core-shell nanowires shows a strong reduction of the relative intensity of the green defect emission with respect to the near-band-edge emission. At 5 K an increase of the relative…

Anisotropic Drop Morphologies on Corrugated Surfaces

Halim Kusumaatmaja、Robert J. Vrancken、Cees W. M. Bastiaansen 等 4 位作者2008-06-12Langmuir

The spreading of liquid drops on surfaces corrugated with micrometer-scale parallel grooves is studied both experimentally and numerically. Because of the surface patterning, the typical final drop shape is no longer spherical. The elongation direction can be either parallel or perpendicular to the direction of the gr…

Magnetic behavior of nanocrystalline LaMn2Ge2

S. Narayana Jammalamadaka、Sitikantha D Das、B. A. Chalke 等 4 位作者2008-06-12arXiv

The compound, LaMn2Ge2, crystallizing in ThCr2Si2-type tetragonal crystal structure, has been known to undergo ferromagnetic order below (T_C=) 326 K. In this article, we report the magnetic behavior of nanocrystalline form of this compound, obtained by high-energy ball-milling. T_C of this compound is reduced maginal…

Femtosecond demagnetization and hot-hole relaxation in ferromagneticGa1−xMnxAs

J. Wang、Łukasz Cywiński、Chanjuan Sun 等 6 位作者2008-06-12Physical Review B

We have studied ultrafast photoinduced demagnetization in GaMnAs via two-color time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy. Below band gap midinfrared pump pulses strongly excite the valence band, while near-infrared probe pulses reveal subpicosecond demagnetization that is followed by an ultrafast $(\ensuremath{\…

Direct evidence of the self-compression of injected electron-hole plasma in silicon

Pavel Altukhov、Evgenii Kuzminov2008-06-12arXiv

A surface distribution of the electroluminescence intensity of silicon p-n light emitting diodes is obtained under space scanning experiments at room temperature. An emitting surface of the diodes, represented by a few small bright emitting dots and a weakly emitting area outside the dots, serves as a direct evidence…

Large magnetocaloric effect in Gd4Co3

Niharika Mohapatra、Kartik K Iyer、E. V. Sampathkumaran2008-06-12arXiv

We report a large entropy change (DeltaS) below 300 K, peaking near TC= 220 K, due to isothermal change of magnetic field, for Gd4Co3, with a refrigeration capacity higher than that of Gd. Notably, the isothermal magnetization is nonhysteretic - an important criterion for magnetic refrigeration without loss. DeltaS be…

Formation and Stability of Shear-Induced Shish-Kebab Structure in Highly Entangled Melts of UHMWPE/HDPE Blends

Jong K. Keum、Feng Zuo、Benjamin S. Hsiao2008-06-12Macromolecules

The formation and stability of a shear-induced shish-kebab structure was investigated by in situ rheo-SAXS (small-angle X-ray scattering) and -WAXD (wide-angle X-ray diffraction) measurements of highly entangled polyethylene melts based on two polymer blends, containing small fractions (2 and 5 wt %) of ultra-high mol…

Stabilization of Oil-in-Water Emulsions by Colloidal Particles Modified with Short Amphiphiles

Ilke Akartuna、André R. Studart、Elena Tervoort 等 5 位作者2008-06-12Langmuir

Emulsions stabilized through the adsorption of colloidal particles at the liquid-liquid interface have long been used and investigated in a number of different applications. The interfacial adsorption of particles can be induced by adjusting the particle wetting behavior in the liquid media. Here, we report a new appr…

Schrödinger Equation for a Particle on a Curved Surface in an Electric and Magnetic Field

G. Ferrari、Giampaolo Cuoghi2008-06-12Physical Review Letters

We derive the Schrödinger equation for a spinless charged particle constrained to move on a curved surface in the presence of an electric and magnetic field. The particle is confined on the surface using a thin-layer procedure, which gives rise to the well-known geometric potential. The electric and magnetic fields ar…

Continuum percolation of carbon nanotubes in polymeric and colloidal media

Andriy V. Kyrylyuk、Paul van der Schoot2008-06-12Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

We apply continuum connectedness percolation theory to realistic carbon nanotube systems and predict how bending flexibility, length polydispersity, and attractive interactions between them influence the percolation threshold, demonstrating that it can be used as a predictive tool for designing nanotube-based composit…

We demonstrate a direct correlation between the domain structure of multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films and exchange bias of Co 0.9Fe 0.1/BiFeO3 heterostructures.
