Mesoscopic simulation of two-dimensional grain growth with anisotropic grain-boundary properties

Dorel Moldovan、D. Wolf、Simon R. Phillpot 等 4 位作者2002-05-01Philosophical magazine. A/Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties

Grain-boundary (GB) properties in a polycrystalline system are generally anisotropic; in particular, both the GB energy and the mobility depend on the GB misorientation. Here the effect of anisotropic GB properties on two- dimensional grain growth is investigated by computer simulation. A stochastic velocity Monte Car…

Andriy Voronov、Olena Shafranska2002-05-01Langmuir

End-grafted polystyrene “brushes” of various thickness and grafting density on silica surfaces were synthesized by surface-initiated polymerization. The “brushes” were studied by contact angle measurements, ellipsometry, and scanning force microscopy (SFM). Wetting behavior of thin polystyrene film on the top of the g…

Effect of Seeding on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of α‐SiAlON: II, Ca‐α‐SiAlON

Roman Shuba、I‐Wei Chen2002-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Seeding effects on the microstructure and mechanical properties of single‐phase Ca‐α‐SiAlON ceramics have been investigated. Whereas a small amount of seeds can transform the microstructure from one of fine equiaxed grains to one consisting of many needle‐like grains, the highest fracture toughness of 8 MPa·m 1/2 is n…

Synthesis andcharacterisation of nanocrystalline MgAl 2 O 4 ceramic powders by use of molten salts

M.F. Zawrah、A. A. El Kheshen2002-05-01British Ceramic Transactions

Nanocrystalline MgAl2O4 powders were prepared by a thermal decomposition method, i.e. by use of molten salts. This method involves co-melting stoichiometric amounts of magnesium nitrate hydrate Mg(NO3)2.6H 2O and aluminium nitrate hydrate Al(N O3) 3.9H2O at 500°C. The spinel content of the co-melted and calcined powde…

Flexible large sheets of dimethylsiloxane‐based inorganic/organic hybrids with sizes of ∼200 mm × 290 mm and ∼1.5 mm thickness have been fabricated from poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and metal alkoxides of Zr and Ta. The hybrid sheets were characterized by XPS, EXAFS, FT‐IR, HRTEM, and SAXS. The inorganic components d…

Combustion Synthesis of the Zn2SiO4:Mn Phosphor

V.B. Bhatkar、S.K. Omanwar、S. V. Moharil2002-05-01physica status solidi (a)

Synthesis of Mn2+-activated zinc silicate phosphor using the combustion method is described. An efficient phosphor can be prepared by this method at reaction temperatures as low as 500 °C in a few minutes. The phosphor so prepared is compared with those prepared by other methods such as sol–gel and CGUPS.

Molar group contributions to the heat of combustion

Richard N. Walters2002-05-01Fire and Materials

Abstract Experimental results for the gross heat of combustion of over 140 commercial and developmental polymers and small molecules of known chemical structure were used to derive additive molar group contributions to the heat of combustion. The materials examined contained carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phospho…

Modeling and Computer Simulation of the Compressional Behavior of Fiber Assemblies

Norman B. Beil、William W. Roberts2002-05-01Textile Research Journal

In this study, the model presented in Part I is used to investigate phenomena related to the compression of fiber assemblies that are not accounted for by van Wyk's theory of the uniaxial compression of an initially random fiber assembly. In order to do this, the potential energy, the work done on the assembly, and a…

Mooney Viscosity Stability and Polymer Filler Interactions in Silica Filled Rubbers

Chenchy J. Lin、William L. Hergenrother、Ashley S. Hilton2002-05-01Rubber Chemistry and Technology

Abstract The change in Mooney viscosity ( ML 1+4 ) with aging was followed for silica filled compounds containing various silanes and polar additives. Several mechanisms for the aging stability are postulated and evaluated through experimentation. The type of silane or polar additive used can cause the ML 1+4 to incre…

Teruhiro Shiono、Tetsuya Hamamoto、Koji Takahara2002-05-01Applied Optics

Blazed diffractive optical elements (DOEs) were studied for the violet wavelength by electron-beam lithography. By optimizing electron-beam writing parameters and electron-dose distributions, we fabricated eight kinds of grating (period A = 10-0.54 microgm) with excellent blazed structure. It has been demonstrated tha…

Effect of Sintering Atmosphere on Grain Shape and Grain Growth in Liquid‐Phase‐Sintered Silicon Carbide

Cheol‐Woo Jang、Joosun Kim、Suk‐Joong L. Kang2002-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

We investigated the effects of the sintering atmosphere on the interface structure and grain‐growth behavior in 10‐vol%‐YAG‐added SiC. When α‐SiC was liquid‐phase‐sintered in an Ar atmosphere, the grain/matrix interface was faceted, and abnormal grain growth occurred, regardless of the presence of α‐seed grains. In co…
