Structure determination of individual single-wall carbon nanotubes by nanoarea electron diffraction

Min Gao、Jian‐Min Zuo、R. D. Twesten 等 6 位作者2003-04-17Applied Physics Letters

In this letter, we report an electron diffraction determination of chiral vectors (n,m) of individual single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Electron diffraction patterns from individual SWNTs were recorded on imaging plates using a parallel electron beam over a section of tube of ∼50 nm long. Using two tubes of 1.39 a…

Sputtering yield measurements during low energy xenon plasma bombardment

R. P. Doerner、D.G. Whyte、D. M. Goebel2003-04-17Journal of Applied Physics

The sputtering yields of molybdenum, titanium, beryllium, and carbon have been measured during xenon ion bombardment from a plasma in the energy range between 10 and 200 eV. The erosion rates of Mo, Be, and C are measured both spectroscopically in the plasma and using the standard weight loss technique. Spectroscopic…

Mixed Alkali Effect in Glasses

Jan Swenson、Stefan Adams2003-04-17Physical Review Letters

We have applied the bond-valence technique to reverse Monte Carlo produced structural models of mixed alkali phosphate glasses in order to elucidate the mixed alkali effect (MAE) in glasses. For the first time, the MAE is reproduced and understood directly from structural models in quantitative agreement with availabl…

Tubular Graphite Cones

Guangyu Zhang、Xin Jiang、Enge Wang2003-04-17Science

We report the synthesis of tubular graphite cones using a chemical vapor deposition method. The cones have nanometer-sized tips, micrometer-sized roots, and hollow interiors with a diameter ranging from about 2 to several tens of nanometers. The cones are composed of cylindrical graphite sheets; a continuous shortenin…

Reversible Sidewall Osmylation of Individual Carbon Nanotubes

Cui、Marko Burghard、Klaus Kern2003-04-17Nano Letters

Sidewall osmylation of individual metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes has been achieved by exposing the tubes to osmium tetroxide vapor under UV photoirradiation. The covalent attachment of the osmium oxide leads to an increase in the electrical resistance by up to several orders of magnitude. The cycloaddition pr…

Basic Connection between Superconductivity and Superfluidity

Mario Rabinowitz2003-04-17arXiv

A basic and inherently simple connection is shown to exist between superconductivity and superfluidity. It is shown here that the author's previously derived general equation which agrees well with the superconducting transition temperatures for the heavy-electron superconductors, metallic superconductors, oxide super…

Two band gap field-dependent thermal conductivity of $MgB_2$

Bai-Mei Wu、Dong-Sheng Yang、Wei-Hua Zeng 等 9 位作者2003-04-17arXiv

The thermal conductivity $κ(H,T)$ of the new superconductor $MgB_2$ was studied as a function of the temperature and a magnetic field. No anomaly in the thermal conductivity $κ(H,T)$ is observed around the superconducting transition in absence or presence of magnetic fields up to 14 Tesla; upon that field the supercon…

Ferroelectric state analysis in grain boundary of Na0.85Li0.15NbO3 ceramic

Marcos A.L. Nobre、Silvania Lanfredi2003-04-17Journal of Applied Physics

The electric and dielectric properties of the grain boundary of Na0.85Li0.15NbO3 lead-free ferroelectric-semiconductor perovskite were investigated. The impedance spectroscopy was carried out as a function of a thermal cycle. The sodium lithium niobate was synthesized by a chemical route based on the evaporation metho…

Magnetism in systems with various dimensionality: A comparison between Fe and Co

Claude Ederer、Matej Komelj、Manfred Faehnle2003-04-17arXiv

A systematic ab initio study is performed for the spin and orbital moments and for the validity of the sum rules for x-ray magnetic circular dichroism for Fe systems with various dimensionality (bulk, Pt-supported monolayers and monatomic wires, free-standing monolayers and monatomic wires). Qualitatively, the results…

Current rectification by simple molecular quantum dots: an ab-initio study

B. Larade、A. M. Bratkovsky2003-04-17arXiv

We calculate a current rectification by molecules containing a conjugated molecular group sandwiched between two saturated (insulating) molecular groups of different length (molecular quantum dot) using an ab-initio non-equilibrium Green's function method. In particular, we study S-(CH2)m-C10H6-(CH2)n-S dithiol with N…

Preparative fractionation of a random copolymer (SAN) with respect to either chain length or chemical composition

Stefan Loske、Anja Schneider、Bernhard A. Wolf2003-04-17arXiv

The possibilities to fractionate copolymers with respect to their chemical composition on a preparative scale by means of the establishment of liquid/liquid phase equilibria were studied for random copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile (san). Experiments with solutions of san in toluene have shown that fractionation…

Evaluation of intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the piezoelectric properties of Pb(Zr1−XTX)O3 thin films as a function of composition

Dong‐Joo Kim、Jon‐Paul Maria、Angus I. Kingon 等 4 位作者2003-04-17Journal of Applied Physics

The piezoelectric, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of highly (111)-textured, 200-nm-thick polycrystalline lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films have been investigated as a function of Zr/Ti ratio. The distinct peak in piezoelectric coefficient at the morphotropic phase boundary found in bulk PZT ceramics is not…

Reentrant Metallic Behavior of Graphite in the Quantum Limit

Y. Kopelevich、J. H. S. Torres、R.R. da Silva 等 6 位作者2003-04-17Physical Review Letters

Magnetotransport measurements performed on several well-characterized highly oriented pyrolitic graphite and single crystalline Kish graphite samples reveal a reentrant metallic behavior in the basal-plane resistance at high magnetic fields, when only the lowest Landau levels are occupied. The results suggest that the…

Direct calculation of the crystal–melt interfacial free energies for continuous potentials: Application to the Lennard-Jones system

Ruslan L. Davidchack、Brian B. Laird2003-04-17The Journal of Chemical Physics

Extending to continuous potentials a cleaving wall molecular dynamics simulation method recently developed for the hard-sphere system [Phys. Rev. Film extrusion and film weldability of poly(lactic acid) plasticized with triacetine and tributyl citrate

Nadia Ljungberg、Thorbjörn Andersson、Bengt Wesslén2003-04-17Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Film extrusion and welding of biodegradable polymer films are important processes that must be considered in the development of compostable packaging materials. Film extrusion of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has proved to be rather difficult because of its brittleness, but the flexibility of PLA can be improved by…
