Reaction kinetics for solid‐state polymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Ben Duh2001-05-30Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract A simple kinetic model capable of describing the behaviors of solid‐state polymerization (SSP) of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has been developed. According to this model, there are two types of end groups, namely active end groups and inactive end groups, and the solid‐state polycondensation reaction i…

A Nanometer-Sized High-Spin Polyradical: Poly(4-phenoxyl-1,2-phenylenevinylene) Planarily Extended in a Non-Kekulé Fashion and Its Magnetic Force Microscopic Images

Hiroyuki Nishide、T. Ozawa、Makoto Miyasaka 等 4 位作者2001-05-30Journal of the American Chemical Society

A pi-conjugated, but non-Kekulé- and nondisjoint-type poly(1,2-phenylenevinylene) network bearing 4-substituted di-tert-butylphenoxyls was synthesized through a one-pot polycondensation of the star-shaped subpart and the subsequent oxidation, which was persistent even at room temperature. The polyphenoxyl radical with…

Influence of the anion potential on the charge ordering in quasi-one-dimensional charge-transfer salts

J. Riera、Didier Poilblanc2001-05-30Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We examine the various instabilities of quarter-filled strongly correlated electronic chains in the presence of a coupling to the underlying lattice. To mimic the physics of the tetramethyltetrathiafulvene $(\mathrm{TMTTF}{)}_{2}X$ Bechgaard-Fabre salts we also include electrostatic effects of intercalated anions. We…

Weiqiang Gu、Wenjing Zhou、Douglas L. Gin2001-05-30Chemistry of Materials

A nanostructured, polymer-supported Sc(III) catalyst for heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysis in water was prepared by quantitative Sc(III) exchange of a cross-linked inverted hexagonal assembly containing sodium sulfonate groups. The material was found to catalyze Mukaiyama aldol and Mannich reactions with a syn/anti p…

Effect of Surface Elasticity on Ostwald Ripening in Emulsions

Marcel B.J. Meinders、William Kloek、T. van Vliet2001-05-30Langmuir

The coarsening of droplets in an emulsion with a size distribution that initially is given by the Lifshitz−Slyozov−Wagner (LSW) distribution is studied by means of numerical calculations taking into account elastic interfacial behavior. Droplets smaller than the critical radius will shrink while droplets larger than t…

Abstract The morphology and properties of polypropylene (PP)/clay nanocomposites are described. The melt intercalation of organophilic clay was carried out with a single‐screw extruder. The effects of two kinds of treatments of clay are discussed. Maleic anhydride (MAH)‐grafted PP was used as a compatibilizer. The exp…

Field-induced structure transformation in electrorheological solids

C. K. Lo、K. W. Yu2001-05-30arXiv

We have computed the local electric field in a body-centered tetragonal (BCT) lattice of point dipoles via the Ewald-Kornfeld formulation, in an attempt to examine the effects of a structure transformation on the local field strength. For the ground state of an electrorheological solid of hard spheres, we identified a…

Measurement of water vapor transmission rate in highly permeable films

Yanfeng Hu、V. A. Topolkaraev、A. Hiltner 等 4 位作者2001-05-30Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Measurements of water vapor transmission rate ( WVTR ) are often based on the wet cup method described by ASTM E 96‐95. In attempting to compare the performance of thin polymer films with moderate to high water vapor permeability, it was observed experimentally that the ASTM method did not give reliable resul…

Transverse Instability of Solitons Propagating on Current-Carrying Metal Thin Films

R. Mark Bradley2001-05-30arXiv

Small amplitude, long waves travelling over the surface of a current-carrying metal thin film are studied. The equation of motion for the metal surface is determined in the limit of high applied currents, when surface electromigration is the predominant cause of adatom motion. If the surface height h is independent of…

W. N. Kang、Hyeong-Jin Kim、Eun-Mi Choi 等 5 位作者2001-05-30arXiv

We report the growth of high-quality c-axis-oriented epitaxial MgB2 thin films by using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The thin films grown on (1`1 0 2) Al2O3 substrates show a Tc of 39 K. The critical current density in zero field is ~ 6 x 10^6 A/cm2 at 5 K and ~ 3 x 10^5 A/cm^2 at 35 K, suggesting that this co…
