Surface and interface study of pulsed-laser-deposited off-stoichiometric NiMnSb thin films on Si(100) substrate

S. Rai、M. K. Tiwari、G. S. Lodha 等 12 位作者2005-10-13arXiv

We report a detailed study of surface and interface properties of pulsed-laser deposited NiMnSb films on Si (100) substrate as a function of film thickness. As the thickness of films is reduced below 35 nm formation of a porous layer is observed. Porosity in this layer increases with decrease in NiMnSb film thickness.…

Magnetic field induced finite size effect in type-II superconductors

T. Schneider2005-10-13arXiv

We explore the occurrence of a magnetic field induced finite size effect on the specific heat and correlation lengths of anisotropic type-II superconductors near the zero field transition temperature Tc. Since near the zero field transition thermal fluctuations are expected to dominate and with increasing field streng…

Direct measurements of water adsorption enthalpy on hafnia and zirconia

Sergey V. Ushakov、Alexandra Navrotsky2005-10-13Applied Physics Letters

A commercial surface area analyzer and Calvet-type microcalorimeter were combined for measurements of heats of gas–solid interactions, providing enhanced resolution, flexibility, and throughput compared to conventional methods. Integral adsorption enthalpies for half monolayer coverage on HfO2 and ZrO2 surfaces were f…

Effect of the applied organic load rate on biodegradable polymer production by mixed microbial cultures in a sequencing batch reactor

Davide Dionisi、Mauro Majone、Giovanni Vallini 等 5 位作者2005-10-13Biotechnology and Bioengineering

This article studies the operation of a new process for the production of biopolymers (polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHAs) at different applied organic load rates (OLRs). The process is based on the aerobic enrichment of activated sludge to obtain mixed cultures able to store PHAs at high rates and yields. A mixture of aceti…

Switching of sub-micrometer sized, antiferromagnetically coupled CoFeB/Ru/CoFeB trilayers

N. Wiese、T. Dimopoulos、M. Ruhrig 等 5 位作者2005-10-13arXiv

This work reports on the magnetic reversal of sub-micrometer sized elements consisting of an CoFeB/Ru/CoFeB artificial ferrimagnet (AFi). The elements were patterned into ellipses having a width of approximately 250 to 270nm and a varying aspect ratio between 1.3 and 8. The coercivity was found to decrease with an inc…

Frustration-induced exotic properties of magnetic molecules

J. Schnack2005-10-13arXiv

Geometric frustration of interacting spin systems is the driving force of a variety of fascinating phenomena in low-dimensional magnetism. In this contribution I will review recent results on frustration-induced effects in magnetic molecules, i.e. zero-dimensional magnetic systems, as well as in a recently synthesized…

Enhanced thermopower upon Ni substitution in Na0.75CoO2

N. GAYATHRI、A. Bharathi、Y. Hariharan2005-10-13arXiv

Thermopower measurements have been carried out on the Ni substituted samples of Na0.75CoO2 in the temperature range 4.2K to 300K. The room temperature TEP increases by 20microV/K even with 1% Ni substitution and systematically increases with increasing Ni content upto 5%. The increase in TEP is accompanied by a decrea…

Effective elastic moduli of polymer bonded explosives from finite element simulations

Biswajit Banerjee2005-10-13arXiv

Finite element analysis has been used successfully to estimate the effective properties of many types of composites. The prediction of effective elastic moduli of polymer-bonded explosives provides a new challenge. These particulate composites contain extremely high volume fractions of explosive particles ($>$ 0.90).…

Simulation of thin hyperelastic shells with the Material Point Method

Biswajit Banerjee2005-10-13arXiv

A non-linear shell theory that includes transverse shear strains and its implementation in the material point method framework are discussed. The applicability of the shell implementation to model large deformations of thin shells is explored. Results suggest that an implicit time stepping scheme may be required for i…

Phosphine-Free Synthesis of CdSe Nanocrystals

Jacek J. Jasieniak、Craig Bullen、Joel van Embden 等 4 位作者2005-10-13The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

High quality CdSe nanocrystals have been prepared using elemental selenium as the chalcogenide precursor dispersed in 1-octadecene (ODE). The conditions used to prepare the Se precursor were found to be critical for successful nanocrystal synthesis. Systematic titration of the Se precursor solution with tri-n-octylpho…

Large Optical Activity of Gold Nanocluster Enantiomers Induced by a Pair of Optically Active Penicillamines

Hiroshi Yao、K. Miki、Naoki Nishida 等 5 位作者2005-10-13Journal of the American Chemical Society

We have succeeded for the first time in preparing a pair of gold nanocluster enantiomers protected by optically active thiols: D- and L-penicillamine (D-Pen and L-Pen). Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy confirmed the mirror image relationship between the D-Pen-capped and the L-Pen-capped gold nanoclusters, suggesti…

Nanoparticles of MnO with average diameters in the 6–14 nm range have been prepared by the decomposition of manganese cupferronate in the presence of TOPO, under solvothermal conditions. Nanoparticles of NiO with average diameters in the 3–24 nm range have been prepared by the decomposition of nickel cupferronate or a…

Heart Valve Tissue Engineering

Ivan Veselý2005-10-13OpenAlex

Tissue-engineered heart valves have been proposed by physicians and scientists alike to be the ultimate solution for treating valvular heart disease. Rather than replacing a diseased or defective native valve with a mechanical or animal tissue-derived artificial valve, a tissue-engineered valve would be a living organ…

Hydrogen Storage in Nanostructured Carbons by Spillover: Bridge-Building Enhancement

Anthony J. Lachawiec、Gongshin Qi、Ralph T. Yang2005-10-13OpenAlex

The hydrogen storage capacity in nanostructured carbon materials can be increased by atomic hydrogen spillover from a supported catalyst. A simple and effective technique was developed to build carbon bridges that serve to improve contact between a spillover source and a secondary receptor. In this work, a supported c…
