Quantitative Analysis of Surface Growth

Colin Goodall、Paul B. Green1986-03-01Botanical Gazette

Characterization of the growth of a small patch of surface, e.g., the outer face of a growing cell during a fixed period of time, can take the form of a strain cross. The long arm of the cross shows the maximum relative extension in the patch. The length of the short arm indicates the minimum extension. With the conve…

The thermotropic mesophase structure of two long-chain alkyl pyridinium halides

C. Géraldine Bazuin、D. Guillon、A. Skoulios 等 4 位作者1986-03-01Liquid Crystals

The thermotropic phase transitions and the mesophase structure of two long-chain alkyl pyridinium halides are described. From small angle X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and dilatometry, the single liquid-crystalline phase found in each material is identified as smectic A. It i…

Improved Optical Resolution of (±)-1,2-Diphenylethylenediamine

Abstract (±)-1,2-Diphenylethylenediamine (DPEDA) was efficiently resolved by the fractional crystallization of its diastereomeric salts with optically active mandelic acid. 1H-NMR spectrum of N-monoacylated DPEDA with an optically active derivatizing agent showed that DPEDA thus obtained was optically pure.

Structure and Mechanism of Formation of Drawing- or Radiation-Induced Defects in SiO2:GeO2 Optical Fiber

Yuichi Watanabe、Hiroshi Kawazoe、Kiyoshi Shibuya 等 4 位作者1986-03-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

The structure, mechanism of formation and thermal reaction of electronic defects associated with Ge in GeO 2 -doped silica fiber induced by fiber-drawing or γ-irradiation were studied by detecting ESR hyperfine structures due to 73 Ge. The present assignment of the drawing-induced center to the Ge-E' center was confir…

Radiation Effects on Pure Silica Core Optical Fibers by γ-Rays: Relation between 2 eV Band and Non-Bridging Oxygen Hole Centers

Kaya Nagasawa、Yutaka Hoshi、Yoshimichi Ohki 等 4 位作者1986-03-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

The defect center causing the 2 eV absorption band induced in pure silica core fibers by 60 Co γ-rays is discussed. The 2 eV band and non-bridging oxygen hole center (NBOHC, SI–O·) show almost the same thermal annealing characteristics. The peak wavelength of the 2 eV band in low-OH (≦6 ppm) fibers is 630 nm, but shif…

Strength‐Toughness Relations in Sintered and Isostatically Hot‐Pressed ZrO 2 ‐Toughened Al 2 O 3

Saburo Hori、Masahiro Yoshimura、Shigeyuki Sōmiya1986-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The fracture toughness of fine‐grained undoped ZrO 2 ‐toughened Al 2 O 3 (ZTA) was essentially unchanged by postsintering hot isostatic pressing and increased monotonically with ZrO 2 additions up to 25 wt%. The strength of ZTA with 5 to 15 wt% tetragonal ZrO 2 , which depended monotonically on the amount of ZrO 2 pre…

Melt motion in a Czochralski crystal puller with an axial magnetic field: isothermal motion

L.N. Hjellming、John S. Walker1986-03-01Journal of Fluid Mechanics

A magnetic field suppresses turbulence and thermal convection in a Czochralski crystal puller. The amounts and distributions of dopants and oxygen in the crystal are determined by the motion of the molten silicon during crystal growth. This paper presents analytical solutions for the melt motion in a Czochralski pulle…
