Three-dimensional structure of rat acid phosphatase in complex with L(+)-tartrate.

Ylva Lindqvist、G. Schneider、Pirkko Vihko1993-10-01Journal of Biological Chemistry

The crystal structure of recombinant rat prostatic acid phosphatase in complex with the inhibitor L(+)-tartrate was determined to 3-A resolution with protein crystallographic methods. The inhibitor binds at the carboxyl end of the parallel strands of the alpha/beta domain. One of the carboxyl groups of the tartrate mo…

Aerosol Generation of Lanthanum Aluminate

Byron C. Lux、Ronald D. Clark、A. Perez Salazar 等 5 位作者1993-10-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Spherical lanthanum aluminate powders approximately 1 μm in diameter were produced using spray pyrolysis techniques. These materials were characterized by X‐ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. Two intermediate products were produced and identified as lanthanum oxide and aluminum oxide. These intermedi…

Infrared-to-ultraviolet photon-avalanche-pumped upconversion in Tm:LiYF_4

A. W. Kueny、William E. Case、Mark Koch1993-10-01Journal of the Optical Society of America B

Infrared laser pumping of Tm:LiYF4 at low temperatures on a transition between excited states leads to strong visible and ultraviolet fluorescence. These effects are believed to arise from a multistep process. In the first step photon avalanche excitation creates a population of Tm3+ ions in states near 15 000 cm−1 an…

Effects of Silicone Softeners and Silane Coupling Agents on the Performance Properties of Cotton Fabrics

K.O. Jang、Kwan‐Nan Yeh1993-10-01Textile Research Journal

We have investigated the effects of reactive and organofunctional silicone softeners and silane coupling agents on the performance properties of cotton fabrics. The silicone softeners were aminofunctional polydimethylsiloxane, reactive polydimethylsiloxane of high viscosity, and hydroxy-end-blocked reactive polydimeth…

Photomechanically induced phase transitions in ferroelectric liquid crystals

H. J. Coles、Harry Walton、D. Guillon 等 4 位作者1993-10-01Liquid Crystals

We demonstrate that the addition of small amounts of a novel azo-dye to a ferroelectric liquid crystal and illumination with low intensity (∼ 0.8 mW cm−2) UV light can result in reversible, isothermal phase transitions and dramatic changes in the properties of the system. In particular we examine light induced transit…

Degradation of polyurethane foams used in the mêcme breast implant

Frank M. Benoit1993-10-01Journal of Biomedical Materials Research

The release of toluene diisocyanate derivatives from polyurethane foam covers that were removed from the Même breast implant was studied. The polyurethane foam covers as retrieved from the implants were contaminated on average with 2,4- and 2,6-toluene diamine (TDA), 2,4- and 2,6-toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and toluen…

Confirmation of the presence of imine bonds in thermally cured polyimides

Ajay Saini、Clifford M. Carlin、Howard H. Patterson1993-10-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A Polymer Chemistry

Abstract Model compounds for imines formed during the thermal curing of short chain polyimides have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds have imine bonds (CN) formed by the nucleophilic attack of primary amines on imide carbonyls. The CN stretching mode appears at 1649–1664 cm −1 in the Raman and infr…

Compositional End Members and Thermodynamic Components of Illite and Dioctahedral Aluminous Smectite Solid Solutions

Barbara Ransom、Harold C. Helgeson1993-10-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract Consideration of XRD, TEM, AEM, and analytical data reported in the literature indicates that dioctahedral aluminous smectite and illite form two separate solid solutions that differ chemically from one another primarily by the extent of Al substitution for Si, the amount of interlayer K, and the presence of…

Studies on miscibility of blends of ethylene methyl acrylate and polydimethyl siloxane rubber

Robin N. Santra、Sanjoy Roy、Anil K. Bhowmick 等 4 位作者1993-10-01Polymer Engineering and Science

Abstract Blends of ethylene methyl acrylate (EMA) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) rubber (PDMS) are demonstrated to be miscible. The miscibility results in a single and composition‐dependent glass transition temperature. IR spectra of the blends provide direct evidence of chemical reaction between EMA and PDMS rubber.

A new low‐image‐lag drive method for large‐size LCTVs

Haruhiko Okumura、Hisao Fujiwara1993-10-01Journal of the Society for Information Display

Abstract— A new low‐image‐lag drive method is proposed for large‐size LCTVs, taking into account the input signal and inter‐field differential signal dependence of the response time. It was shown that the gray‐level response time was 30–60 ms, which is 2–3 times as long as the ON‐OFF bi‐level response time, and was ex…

Slow Crack Growth in Sapphire Fibers at 800° to 1500°C

Stephen A. Newcomb、Richard E. Tressler1993-10-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Sapphire fibers with (near) c ‐axis orientation were tested in tension over a range of strain rates (10 −5 to 0.5 min −1 ) at elevated temperatures (800° to 1500°C). The strength of the fibers was dependent on the strain rate. Slow crack growth was confirmed as the degradation process by direct inspection of the fract…
