The mode of fracture and the dictile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of high purity iron (\gtrsim99.999%) have been investigated with two sets of specimens of different grain boundary character. Wire specimens of 0.4 mm diameter were tested in tension at a strain rate of 8.33×10−5/s.The grain structure of one…

Corrosion Behavior of Titanium Alloys in a Sulfur-Containing H2S-CO2-Cl− Environment

Masakatsu Ueda、T. Kudo、S. Kitayama 等 4 位作者1992-01-01CORROSION

Corrosion behavior of Ti alloy containing Mo and Pd with high-yield strength were studied in S-containing H2S-CO2-Cl− environment at elevated temperature. Ti alloys showed stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility in this environment, and the susceptibility largely depended on the yield strength of the alloys. It…

Metal Instability of (DMe-DCNQI)2Cu Induced by Uniaxial Stress and Enhancement of Electron Mass

Akihito Miyamoto、Hayao Kobayashi、Reìzo Kato 等 7 位作者1992-01-01Chemistry Letters

Abstract The metal instability of (DMe-DCNQI)2Cu was induced by applying uniaxial stress or coating the crystal with Apiezon L grease. The quadratic temperature dependence of the resistivity gave an indication of the large enhancement of the effective mass of the conduction electrons.

Computer-aided procedure for optimization of layer thickness uniformity in thermal evaporation physical vapor deposition chambers for lens coating

Salvador Bosch1992-01-01Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology A Vacuum Surfaces and Films

A computer-aided method to improve the thickness uniformity attainable when coating multiple substrates inside a thermal evaporation physical vapor deposition unit is presented. The study is developed for the classical spherical (dome-shaped) calotte and also for a plane sector reversible holder setup. This second arr…

Coarsening Dynamics in Nematic Liquid Crystals

Bernard Yurke、A. N. Pargellis、Neil Turok1992-01-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals science technology. Section A, Molecular crystals and liquid crystals/Molecular crystals and liquid crystals science and technology. Section A, Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

There is considerable interest in the dynamics of topological defects formed during a symmetry breaking phase transition in fields as diverse as condensed matter physics, particle physics and cosmology. Liquid crystals, with their many symmetry breaking phase transitions are ideal materials for such studies. Here we r…

The Effect of Fibre Shape and Fibre-assembly Structure on FUKURAMI of Silk Continuous—filament Fabrics

Mitsuo Matsudaira1992-01-01Journal of the Textile Institute

In order to investigate the effect of fibre shape and fibre-assembly structure on FUKURAMI (fullness and softness) of a silk continuous-filament fabric, silk fibres were taken out of the fabric and characterized precisely. The fibre-assembly structure of these silk fibres is discussed in relation to the mechanical pro…

J.K. Sylculslci、E. Sykulska、Sam Hughes1992-01-01COMPEL The International Journal for Computation and Mathematics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Application of finite‐element modelling of magnetic fields in a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) is demonstrated and electromagnetics of such devices briefly discussed. A finite‐element aided design of a particular LVDT, built and tested at USITT, Southampton, is used to illustrate practical aspects of…

Removal of Inclusions in Stainless Steel by Electron Beam Melting.

Ryuji Nakao、Shigeo Fukumoto、Wataru Murata 等 5 位作者1992-01-01ISIJ International

Electron beam melting is thought to deoxidize and remove inclusions by high-temperature and high-vacuum melting. A rod melting technique using 250 kW EB furnace was applied to stainless steels and resulted in the following:Deoxidation is enhanced by the CO degassing reaction, and the adjustment of feeding material com…

Interlace Patterns in Islamic and Moorish Art

Branko Grünbaum、G. C. Shephard、Branko Grunbaum1992-01-01Leonardo

Repetitive interlace patterns are one of the hallmarks of Islamic and Moorish art. Through the study of various collections of such patterns, it is easy to verify that, despite the considerable complexity of the designs, most of the interlaces are formed by strands of a small number of shapes—often just a single shape…

Numerical Simulation of Shear Induced Plugging in HY100 Steel Plates

E.P. Chen1992-01-01International Journal of Damage Mechanics

Numerical simulations of penetration processes in HY100 steel plates were performed in this study. The penetrators were made of maraging steel rods and the impact velocity ranges from 78-400 m/s. Experimental evidence shows that the dominant mode of failure in HY100 steel plates is shear induced plugging. By using a m…
