Elastic properties of a tungsten-silver composite by reconstruction and computation

A. P. Roberts、E. J. Garboczi1999-01-28arXiv

We statistically reconstruct a three-dimensional model of a tungsten-silver composite from an experimental two-dimensional image. The effective Young's modulus ($E$) of the model is computed in the temperature range 25-1060^o C using a finite element method. The results are in good agreement with experimental data. As…

Structural Features of Protein−Nucleic Acid Recognition Sites

Katalin Nadassy、Shoshana J. Wodak、Joël Janin1999-01-28OpenAlex

We analyzed the atomic models of 75 X-ray structures of protein-nucleic acid complexes with the aim of uncovering common properties. The interface area measured the extent of contact between the protein and nucleic acid. It was found to vary between 1120 and 5800 A2. Despite this wide variation, the interfaces in comp…

Synthesis and Characterization of Carboxylate-Modified Gold Nanoparticle Powders Dispersible in Water

Sihai Chen、Keisaku Kimura1999-01-28OpenAlex

Carboxylate-modified gold nanoparticles have been synthesized in a single-phase system based on the reduction of hydrogen tetrachloroaurate(III) by sodium borohydride in methanol using mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) as the stabilizing thiol ligand. Five samples with diameters of 10.2, 10.8, 12.8, 19.4, and 33.6 Å have be…

Free Radical Polymerization of 7-Methyl-1-methylene-3-phenylindene. Copoly(methylene/7-methyl-3-phenyl-1,1-indenylene)−Excimer Photoluminescence

Timothy Londergan、Conan J. Teng、William P. Weber1999-01-27Macromolecules

The free radical polymerization of 7-methyl-1-methylene-3-phenylindene ( IV ) yields copoly(methylene/7-methyl-3-phenyl-1,1-indenylene) ( V ). This novel copolymer has an aliphatic backbone and pendant cross-conjugated 1,1-diphenylethylene chromophores. In a dilute solution of V, two emissions are detected at 347 and…

Crystallization under Strain and Resultant Orientation of Poly(ε-caprolactone) in Miscible Blends

Yue Zhao、Daniel Keroack、Robert E. Prud’homme1999-01-27Macromolecules

The crystallization of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) in stretched miscible and amorphous blends containing 25−50 wt % of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was monitored by infrared spectroscopy. It was found that, under most conditions, the crystallization under strain leads to a segmental crystalline orientation perpendicular…

The Structure of Solid Copper(I) Cyanide: A Multinuclear Magnetic and Quadrupole Resonance Study

Scott Kroeker、Roderick E. Wasylishen、John V. Hanna1999-01-27Journal of the American Chemical Society

Carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of solid copper(I) cyanide present a clear picture of its molecular structure as comprising linear, polymeric chains: [−Cu−N−C−] n . Copper-63/65 nuclear quadrupole resonance reveals that the cyanide ligands are subject to “head-tail” disorder. Magic-a…

Femtosecond electron and spin dynamics probed by nonlinear optics

G. P. Zhang、W. Hübner1999-01-27arXiv

A theoretical calculation is performed for the ultrafast spin dynamics in nickel using an exact diagonalization method. The present theory mainly focuses on a situation where the intrinsic charge and spin dynamics is probed by the nonlinear (magneto-)optical responses on the femtosecond time scale, i.e. optical second…

Chord distribution functions of three-dimensional random media: Approximate first-passage times of Gaussian processes

Anthony Roberts、S. Torquato1999-01-27arXiv

The main result of this paper is a semi-analytic approximation for the chord distribution functions of three-dimensional models of microstructure derived from Gaussian random fields. In the simplest case the chord functions are equivalent to a standard first-passage time problem, i.e., the probability density governin…

Mingqi Zhao、Yuelong Liu、Richard M. Crooks 等 4 位作者1999-01-26Journal of the American Chemical Society

This report describes the synthesis, characterization, and passivation properties of durable, polyfunctional, and highly cross-linked hyperbranched dendrimer/polyanhydride composite thin films. Such films are prepared from either amine- or hydroxyl-terminated poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers or amine-terminated pol…

Adsorption−Desorption of Chlordimeform on Montmorillonite: Effect of Clay Aggregation and Competitive Adsorption with Cadmium

Tomás Undabeytia López、Shlomo Nir、Tamara Polubesova 等 6 位作者1999-01-26Environmental Science & Technology

Effect of the aggregation state of montmorillonite clays of types SAz-1 and SWy-1 on the adsorption of the monovalent organic cation chlordimeform was studied. The shapes of the adsorption isotherms were related to the degree of dispersion of the clay, changing from S- to L-type by decreasing clay concentration. Unlik…

Physical Properties of Polyaniline Films: Assembled by the Layer-by-Layer Technique

Manoj K. Ram、Marco Salerno、M. Adami 等 5 位作者1999-01-26Langmuir

Sequential addition of a polyanion, poly(styrene sulfonate), and a polycation, polyaniline, lead to the formation of layer-by-layer films at different solid surfaces. The prime variables which determine the films formation of poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS)/polyaniline (PANI) were the polymer charge and ionic strength.…

Raman Scattering Due to Disorder-Induced Polaritons

Lev I. Deych、M. Erementchouk、V. A. Ignatchenko1999-01-26arXiv

The selection rules for dipole and Raman activity can be relaxed due to local distortion of a crystalline structure. In this situation a dipole-inactive mode can become simultaneously active in Raman scattering and in dipole interaction with the electromagnetic field. The later interaction results in disorder-induced…

We report on the effects of using SrFe7Al5O19 as a buffer layer for growth of high-quality epitaxial barium-ferrite thin films on sapphire substrates. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the buffer layer causes the interfacial strains in the barium-ferrite films to relax. As a result, the ferromagnetic resonance lin…

Mass-transfer enhancement via chaotic laminar flow within a droplet

Michelle D. Bryden、Howard Brenner1999-01-25Journal of Fluid Mechanics

The Stokes flow occurring within a non-neutrally buoyant spherical droplet translating by buoyancy through an immiscible liquid which is undergoing simple shear is shown to be chaotic under many circumstances for which the droplet translates by buoyancy through the entraining fluid. This flow is easily produced, for e…
