On the Microstructures Resulting from the Diffusionless Cubic→Tetragonal Transformation in ZrO 2 ‐Y 2 O 3 Alloys

V. Lanteri、R. Chaim、A. H. Heuer1986-10-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

A diffusionless cubic (c)→metastable tetragonal (t′) phase transformation occurs in certain alloys in the ZrO 2 ‐Y 2 O 3 system on quenching from elevated temperatures. Microstructural features due to this phase transformation, principally anti‐phase domain boundaries (APB's) and mechanical accommodation twins, have b…

Formation of intermetallic compounds during solidification of dilute Al–Fe–Si alloys

Ping Liu、T. Thorvaldsson、G. L. Dunlop1986-10-01Materials Science and Technology

Dilute Al–Fe–Si alloys with Fe/Si weight ratios of 2 and 4, which had been subjected to solidification rates of ~1 and ~10 Ks−1 were investigated by analytical transmission electron microscopy. The precipitation of ‘constituent’ intermetallic phases was characterized as a function of the Fe/Si ratio, alloy purity, rat…

Short fiber‐reinforced thermoplastic elastomers from blends of natural rubber and polyethylene

Sania Akhtar、P. P. De、S. K. De1986-10-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Thermoplastic elastomer blends of natural rubber (NR) with high density polyethylene (HDPE) and with low density polyethylene (LDPE) were reinforced with short silk fiber. Processing characteristics such as torque and temperature developed during mixing and the effect of processing parameters such as nip gap…

Mechanism of Strength Degradation for Hot Corrosion of α‐SiC

James L. Smialek、Nathan Jacobson1986-10-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Sintered α‐SiC was corroded by thin films of Na 2 SO 4 and Na 2 CO 3 molten salts at 1000°C. This hot corrosion attack reduced room‐temperature strengths by as much as 50%. Strength degradation was proportional to the degree and uniformity of corrosion pitting attack as controlled by the chemistry of the molten salt.…

Nonuniform local magnetism in Al-Mn quasicrystals

W. W. Warren、H. S. Chen、G. P. Espinosa1986-10-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The distribution of local magnetism in Al-Mn quasicrystal alloys has been studied by NMR spin-echo techniques. The $^{55}\mathrm{Mn}$ resonance is found to be close to the position observed in non-magnetic orthorhombic ${\mathrm{Al}}_{6}$Mn and $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{Al}}_{73}{\mathrm{Si}}_{10}{\ma…

The Heterogeneous Reaction of Ozone on Carbonaceous Surfaces

S. J. Stephens、Michel J. Rossi、David M. Golden1986-10-01International Journal of Chemical Kinetics

Abstract Ozone, O 3 , reacts with a carbon sample at room temperature. Clean carbon samples show a half to one and a half order of magnitude increased initial rate constant ( k 0 ) for O 3 loss relative to repetitively exposed carbon samples. The ozone loss rate and therefore the rate constant reaches steady state ( k…

O2 radicals in arachidonate-induced increased blood-brain barrier permeability to proteins

E. P. Wei、M. D. Ellison、H. A. Kontos 等 4 位作者1986-10-01American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology

We studied the effect of topical application of arachidonate on the brain surface on blood-brain barrier permeability to either 125I-labeled human albumin or to horseradish peroxidase administered intravenously. Arachidonate was applied under a cranial window, and the concentration of albumin was measured in brain aft…

A simple construction of the AlCuLi quasicrystalline structure related to the (Al, Zn)49 Mg32 cubic structure type

M. Audier、P. Sainfort、B. Dubost1986-10-01Philosophical Magazine B

Both b.c.c. and icosahedral AlCuLi phases coexist following conventional ingot casting. Owing to a slight difference in their composition, they can be distinguished by a Z-contrast technique in a scanning electron microscope. Moreover, the existence of an orientation relationship between the b.c.c. and icosahedral (Al…

Cloning, expression, and nucleotide sequence of the formate dehydrogenase genes from Methanobacterium formicicum.

Anthony P. Shuber、Elizabeth C. Orr、M A Recny 等 7 位作者1986-10-01Journal of Biological Chemistry

The genes for the two subunits of the formate dehydrogenase from Methanobacterium formicicum were cloned and their sequences determined. When expressed in Escherichia coli, two proteins were produced which had the appropriate mobility on an SDS gel for the two subunits of formate dehydrogenase and cross-reacted with a…

Interface excitations in layered structures with metallized surfaces

Manvir S. Kushwaha1986-10-01Journal of Applied Physics

A theoretical investigation has been made of the interface excitations associated with the double inversion layers of semiconductor-insulator-semiconductor structure with metallized surfaces. The general dispersion relation has been derived using the local electromagnetic theory. The numerical computation is performed…

Mechanical Failure Characteristics of Ceramic Multilayer Capacitors

K. R. McKinney、R. W. Rice、Carl Wu1986-10-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The results of both uniaxial and biaxial flexure as well as toughness testing on actual commercial ceramic capacitor samples are reported. Necessary procedural adjustments are outlined for miniaturizing the applied‐moment double‐cantilever‐beam test to accommodate these small samples. Strength and toughness testing sh…

J. Garbarczyk1986-10-01Die Makromolekulare Chemie

Abstract The molecular and crystal structure of bis(4‐mercaptophenyl) sulfide ( 3 ) was determined by means of an X‐ray diffraction analysis. The crystals are monoclinic, P 2 1 / n with four molecules in the unit cell of the dimensions: a = 5,752 (1), b = 25,767 (9), c = 7,954 (2) Å and β = 95,2 (1)°. The structure wa…

Kôji Uchida、Shunrô Kawakishi1986-10-01Agricultural and Biological Chemistry

Oxidative depolymerization of several polysaccharides induced by oxygen radical generating systems such as ascorbic acid-copper ion was investigated by the increases in their reducing powers and by gel-filtration. All polysaccharides used in these experiments were greatly depolymerized within 24 hr at room temperature…

Behavior of Breached Pressurized Water Reactor Spent-Fuel Rods in an Air Atmosphere between 250 and 360°C

R.E. Einziger、R.V. Strain1986-10-01Nuclear Technology

Oxidation tests on spent-fuel fragments and rod segments were conducted between 250 and 360°C to relate temperature and defect size to fuel oxidation rate and time-to-cladding-splitting. Defect sizes from an equivalent circular diameter of 8 µm (the approximate size of a stress-corrosion-cracking-type breach) to 760 µ…
