A simple model for the depinning and dynamics of a sliding charge-density wave is presented. The model consists of viscously damped motion in a periodic potential and accounts for the main features of the nonlinear conductivity, noise, and ac-dc coupling in the charge-density-wave state of Nb${\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ at low…
The two photon excited fluorescence excitation spectrum of UF6 has been observed in the region 410 to 315 nm. The spectrum is virtually indistinguishable from the one photon absorption in this region. No vibronic structure was observed in absorption or dispersed emission. These data indicate a high density of u and g…
The results of Raman scattering measurements on the mixed-crystal system $1T\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{T}\mathrm{a}{\mathrm{S}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Se}}_{x}$ in the commensurate charge-density-wave state are reported. In the pure compounds, our measurements indicate that a strong LA-TA phonon interaction at the dist…
A set of polarized low-energy-electron diffraction (PLEED) data from a W(100) surface measured using a polarized electron beam is presented. The data include conventional LEED profiles $I(E,\ensuremath{\theta})$ as well as $S(E,\ensuremath{\theta})$ profiles which measure the spin dependence of the scattering. These p…
The compound ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{x}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$, which has been prepared in the form of single crystals and powders, only forms in a narrow range of stoichiometry near $x=\frac{1}{4}$. The crystal structure of Nb${\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ is radically modified by the addition of iron and con…
We have found exact limits on the validity of the Flory–Huggins approximate treatment of stiff chains on a lattice for small values of g, the fraction of gauche bonds, by obtaining lower bounds for the total number of Hamilton walks WH(g) as a limiting case of the lattice model. The Flory–Huggins approximation underes…
The silver halide crystals have many peculiarities in their physical properties which are uncommon among the simple ionic solids. The different theoretical models used to calculate the properties of this group of solids have concentrated on explaining one or the other of them. But these calculations have one major dif…
The infrared and Raman spectra of N2 matrix-isolated silicon oxides were investigated. The vibrational frequencies of SiO, Si2O2, and Si3O3 were identified and assigned on the basis of normal coordinate analyses. Heating the solid to ∼50 K (evaporating the matrix) leaves a residue whose infrared spectrum is identical…
The iron(II) sulfonates Fe(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 and Fe(p-CH 3 C 6 H 4 SO 3 ) 2 have been prepared and on the basis of vibrational and electronic spectra and magnetic and MÖssbauer data have been assigned a layer lattice structure involving hexacoordinated iron(II) and terdentate bridging anions. The FeO 6 chromophore in thes…
The electronic structures of $\mathrm{Ti}{\mathrm{H}}_{x}$, $\mathrm{Zr}{\mathrm{H}}_{x}$, and $\mathrm{Hf}{\mathrm{H}}_{x}$ have been studied using photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron radiation. Structures in the metal $d$-derived band within \ensuremath{\sim}3 eV of the Fermi level ${E}_{F}$ and in the bondin…
An analysis of fragmentation due to dynamic stress loading is presented which provides analytic functions for the distributions in fragment sizes. The analysis is restricted to one‐dimensional bodies under uniform tensile loading. Concepts of survival statistics are used to account for spatially random fracture nuclea…
Abstract Oxidation, cool flames and ignition in equimolar mixtures of acetaldehyde and oxygen have been studied in a well stirred, continuous-flow reactor (an open system), over temperatures from 450 to 625 K and pressures from 5 to 25 kN m-2. The reactor is a 500 cm3, spherical, glass vessel, ca. 10 cm in diameter, a…
Infrared dichroism measurements can be used to study the process-structure-property relations of a polymer provided the transition-moment angle and phase absorption characteristics of the individual absorption frequencies are known. The present study describes experimental procedures for determining these intrinsic fr…
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper presents a discussion of the stress-range fatigue-design concept, including the results for 77 welded and cold-formed steel-sheet specimens exposed to constant-amplitude stress cycles with stress ratios of 0.02 to 0.34. The test specimens were fabricated from steels wit…
The irradiation performance of injected thermosetting fuel rods is compared to that of standard pitch-based rods for test conditions exceeding current high-temperature gas-cooled reactor requirements. Thermosetting rods have processing advantages in that they can be carbonized freestanding without loss of shape, but s…
Introduction Although the soil as a corrosive environment is probably of greater complexity than any other environment, it is possible to make some generalisations regarding soil types and corrosion. It is necessary to emphasise that corrosion in soils is extremely variable and can range from the rapid to the negligib…

Electrolytical charging tests on cubic face-centered materials with different nickel contents, on CuZn 30 and the cubic body-centered reference materials X 8 Ni 9 as well as on technically pure iron. Determination of the mechanical parameters of specimens after hydrogen charging, after hydrogen charging and tempering…
An extensive study was made of the mechanical properties of the polymer–leather composite materials reported in previous articles. Polymer was deposited into leather by both emulsion and bulk (or solution) polymerization. Either methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, or a fixed comonomer mixture of n-butyl acrylate an…
