Processing factors that influence casein and serum protein separation by microfiltration

Emily E. Hurt、D.M. Barbano2010-09-20Journal of Dairy Science

Our objective was to demonstrate the effect of various processing factors on the performance of a microfiltration system designed to process skim milk and separate casein (CN) from serum proteins (SP). A mathematical model of a skim milk microfiltration process was developed with 3 stages plus an additional fourth fin…

On the Condition for Thermal Rectification Using Bulk Materials

David B. Go、Mihir Sen2010-09-20ASME Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer

In conduction, thermal rectification occurs when a material or structure transfers heat asymmetrically. In this work, it is shown that, in the bulk, a necessary condition for thermal rectification is that the thermal conductivity of the material or structure be a function of both space and temperature, and that this f…

Switching of a Single Boryl Center in π‐Conjugated Photochromic Polyboryl Compounds and Its Impact on Fluorescence Quenching

Chul Baik、Stephen K. Murphy、Suning Wang2010-09-20Angewandte Chemie International Edition

All for one and one for all: Molecules with multiple conjugated photochromic boryl units undergo photoisomerization on a single boryl unit only. This single boryl switching causes fluorescence quenching of the entire molecule, which is greatly amplified with increasing numbers of switchable boryl units in the molecule.

Dynamic Modeling of Three-Phase Asymmetric Power Transformers With Magnetic Hysteresis: No-Load and Inrush Conditions

Paul Moses、Mohammad A. S. Masoum、Hamid A. Toliyat2010-09-20IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion

A new dynamic model of a three-phase three-leg transformer for steady-state and transient operating conditions is proposed in this paper. With very few exceptions, the existing models oversimplify the magnetic interactions in multileg core topologies and employ single-value nonlinear functions for modeling core nonlin…

Growth and Characterization of Conducting ZnO Thin Films by Atomic Layer Deposition

Yo‐Sep Min、Cheng-Jin An、Seong Keun Kim 等 5 位作者2010-09-20Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society

ZnO thin films were grown on Si or <TEX>$SiO_2$</TEX>/Si substrates, at growth temperatures ranging from 150 to <TEX>$400^{\circ}C$</TEX>, by atomic layer deposition (ALD) using diethylzinc and water. Despite the large band gap of 3.3 eV, the ALD ZnO films show high n-type conductivity, i.e. low resistivity in the ord…

Huaiyu Yang、Åke C. Rasmuson2010-09-20Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data

The solubility of butyl paraben (butyl 4-hydroxybenzoate) have been determined in methanol, ethanol, propanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, and acetonitrile in the temperature range of (10 to 50) °C by the gravimetric method. The order of the solubility of butyl paraben in the different solvents as mass fraction at 20 °C i…

François Perreault、Abdallah Oukarroum、Laura Pirastru 等 6 位作者2010-09-20Journal of Botany

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs), used in antifouling paints of boats, are released in the environment and can induce toxicity to aquatic organisms. In this report, we used chlorophyll a fluorescence imaging to evaluate CuO NPs toxicity in Lemna gibba . This approach allowed to evaluate the differential effect of…

Abstract Despite the recent interest in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) as chemical and biological sensors, little is known about the role that device architecture and materials parameters play in determining sensor performance. We use numerical modeling to establish design rules in two regimes of operatio…

First-principles study of fluorine-doped zinc oxide

Bo Liu、Mu Gu、Xiaolin Liu 等 5 位作者2010-09-20Applied Physics Letters

We present first-principles calculations for fluorine-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:F) by using density-functional theory. Under O-poor condition, fluorine substitution for oxygen (FO) is energetically favorable in ZnO. FO can effectively diminish oxygen vacancies. With high fluorine concentration, fluorine interstitial (Fi)…

Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Trace Identification of Controlled Substances: Morphine, Codeine, and Hydrocodone

Vinesh Rana、María Vega Cañamares、Thomas A. Kubic 等 5 位作者2010-09-20Journal of Forensic Sciences

We obtain the normal Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectrum of three controlled substances: morphine, codeine, and hydrocodone. The spectra are assigned with the aid of density functional theory. Because of rather intense fluorescence, normal Raman spectra suffer from poor signal-to-noise, even when differential su…

Xiaohe Liu、Renzhi Ma、Yoshio Bando 等 4 位作者2010-09-20Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Layered cobalt hydroxide nanocones intercalated with dodecyl sulfate (DS) ions (see scheme; OH− blue, Co green dots, DS ions red) could be synthesized by the microwave-assisted rolling of lamellar structures. The cones could be exfoliated into cobalt hydroxide nanosheets and converted into CoOOH and Co3O4 nanocones.
