The formation of elongated dislocation loops in deformed copper single crystals has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. A mechanism by which elongated loops could be formed is considered in detail. The density of these loops was found to increase only slightly during stage I of the stress-strain curve, b…
The theories of three non-linear optical processes are given: (i) the creation of excitons by simultaneous absorption of two photons of different frequency; the particular case of Cu 2 O is treated in detail; (ii) the generation of second-harmonic radiation from a monochromatic primary beam in a crystal without a cent…

The solid solutions (1- x )FeTiO 3 - x Fe 2 O 3 exhibit strong ferromagnetic moments in the composition range 0.1< x <0.6. In this region cation ordering is thought to occur such that the Fe 2+ and Ti 4+ ions occupy alternate (111) layers, thus forming sublattices A[ x Fe 3+ , (1- x )Fe 2+ ] and B[ x Fe 3+ , (1- x )Ti…
It has been shown by DeBlois that surface flaws decrease the magnitude of the nucleation field of iron whiskers below the ideal theoretical value Hn0=2K1/Ms. It is assumed here that the number of flaws in area S is determined by a Poisson distribution, with mean number λS (λ=const); that each flaw independently has a…
The dielectric constant of vacuum-deposited ZnS films was measured as a function of thickness in the range of 350 Å to 4 μ. For room temperature deposition, a sharp anomaly was found in the dielectric constant vs thickness curve. The highest measured constant was 34.7 at a thickness of 900 Å. As the thickness increase…
Abstract 1) The most active catalyst was obtained when 400 mg. of silk-fibroin was boiled with 30 ml. of 0.5% aqueous solution of rhodium chloride for ca. 30 min., and the resulting chelate was then reduced. 2) The activity of this catalyst was not influenced significantly by the conditions for its preparation and was…

A study of three types of anomalous nickel-iron magnetic films has been made: high coercive-force films, which have unusually large hysteresigraph values of wall and rotational coercive forces; rotatable initial-susceptibility films, for which the value of the initial susceptibility as found from low-field hysteresigr…
Anorthite CaA12Si20 s has the same point group, I, as a simple felspar, but four times the volume per lattice point; its unit cell is primitive, with a 14 Jk c-axis, while that of albite, for comparison, is C-face-centred with a 7 A c-axis.Anorthite approximates much more closely to a C-face-centred cell with a 14 A c…
1. Free glycerol was identified as a major carbohydrate component of the dormant cysts of Artemia salina. 2. The amount of glycerol present in cysts aged for a year in the dry state was found to be about 5% of the cyst weight, and was shown to be restricted to the embryonic part of the cyst. 3. Glycerol content decrea…

The steady‐state creep behavior of polycrystalline aluminum oxide from 97 to 100% dense has been examined at temperatures from 1600° to 1800°C over a range of stresses from 100 to 2000 psi under four‐point transverse bending. Grain size is shown to have an important effect on the deformation behavior. Stress‐strain ra…
Magnetization reversal at an angle to the easy direction in Ni-Fe films was studied. The results, in contrast to the single-domain theory, show no coherent rotation, even for field directions in which the critical field for rotation is smaller than the critical field for wall motion. The actual reversal is initiated b…
New values are presented and discussed for the thermal conductivities and electrical resistivities of ruthenium, osmium, rhodium, iridium, palladium and platinum over the approximate temperature range 80° to 500°K.

It has been reported that SrTiO₃/ becomes ferroelectric below about 50 deg K. When SrTiO₃ is compared with well known ferroelectrics such as BaTiO₃, remarkable contrasts are found in their dielectric properties. The dielectric constants are examined in three directions: STA110!, STA111!, and STA100!. (W.D.M.)
