At 460°C the passage of direct current through ceramic pellets of cerium dioxide containing one weight percent calcium oxide caused distinct volume discolorations to appear. The current at constant applied bias increased gradually from its initial value during the formation of the discolored regions, finally reaching…

Measurements and calculations using elliptically polarized light to determine the thickness and index of refraction of barium stearate films on a variety of substrates are described. Attention is focused especially upon problems associated with the study of very thin films, that is, films which are less than 100 Å thi…
Abstract Morphological, chemical, mineralogical, and physical data are reported for 13 profiles of Grumusols, representing 3 soil series, all of which have developed in the Beaumont clay geological formation. These are the dominant soils in a narrow 10 million‐acre strip, some 40 miles wide, that extends 300 miles in…

Thermal conductivity determinations made over the temperature range 83° K to 293° K for three single crystal samples of the orthorhombic metal gallium having axes approximately in the crystallographic c, a and b axial directions confirm preliminary values previously obtained at about 273° K for the same samples. A met…

Radio-frequency pulse methods have been used to investigate the solvent-proton and fluorine nuclear relaxation mechanisms in solutions of the organic free radicals α,α′-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and of di-tertiary-butylnitroxide (DTBN) in molecular liquids. The protons 1/T1 and 1/T2 depend linearly upon DPPH co…

Pressure-temperature equilibria curves for a series of some 20 rare-earth arsenates and rare-earth vanadates which undergo the reconstructive transition zircon (Zr SiO4) ⇆ scheelite (CaWO4) type structure in the region 10 000–60 000 atm were obtained. From these curves, a set of data were extracted representing (with…

The reactions between zirconia and titanium were studied by (1) weight change and bulk density determinations, (2) chemical analysis, (3) metallographic and petrographic analyses, (4) microhardness determinations, (5) lattice parameter measurements, (6) electron probe analysis, and (7) thermal conductivity determinati…
Summary On the basis of published data and their own observations, the authors suggest that sulphate expansion is caused by the solid state conversion of C 4 AH 13 to calcium aluminate monosulphate and that this expansion mayor may not be accommodated depending on the concentration of lime in the liquid phase.
The density of solution-grown polyethylene crystals was determined by a pycnometer method, judged to be least affected by systematic errors. Values close to the ideal crystallographic density were obtained, the latter having been redetermined on the preparation type in question. This result is consistent with the mole…

Current experimental results indicate that sonoluminescence is largely thermal in origin, with the spectra showing a direct relation between luminous intensity and the temperatures generated inside the collapsing cavitation bubbles. In the present paper, the strong dependence of the luminous intensity on the nature of…

A study was made on the force-area, surface potential-area, and surface moment-area relations of monolayers of two series of progressively fluorinated fatty acids spread on water at various pH values. The series were n-heptadecanoic acids with substitutions in the 17-position of perfluoromethyl, perfluoropropyl, perfl…
