Experimental sulphur-33 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Peter Belton、I. Jane Cox、Robin K. Harris1985-01-01Journal of the Chemical Society Faraday Transactions 2 Molecular and Chemical Physics

The potential of sulphur-33 n.m.r. spectroscopy for chemical applications is explored. Data are presented for a range of compounds. Spectra have been obtained using both high-power and high-resolution systems. Moderately high field strengths were used (7.05 and 4.70 T), together with a special pulse sequence to reduce…

A. M. Figueiredo Neto、Y. Galerne、A. M. Levelut 等 4 位作者1985-01-01Journal de Physique Lettres

Synchrotron X-ray measurements are performed in both uniaxial (discotic and calamitic) and biaxial nematic lyomesophases of the mixture K-laurate, 1-decanol and D2O. A first-order band and a second-order band with spacing ratio 1 : 2 characteristic of a pseudo-lamellar structure are observed in the three nematic phase…

Ion-beam-assisted etching of diamond

N. N. Efremow、M. W. Geis、D. C. Flanders 等 5 位作者1985-01-01Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology B Microelectronics Processing and Phenomena

The high thermal conductivity, low rf loss, and inertness of diamond make it useful in traveling wave tubes operating in excess of 500 GHz. Such use requires the controlled etching of type IIA diamond to produce grating like structures tens of micrometers deep. Previous work on reactive ion etching with O2 gave etchin…

Asymmetric epoxidation of alkenes catalysed by a ‘basket-handle’ iron–porphyrin bearing amino acids

Daniel Mansuy、Pierrette Battioni、Jean‐Paul Renaud 等 4 位作者1985-01-01Journal of the Chemical Society Chemical Communications

A ‘basket-handle’ iron-porphyrin bearing L-phenylalanine residues has been prepared and found to catalyse the epoxidation of p-chlorostyrene with a 50% excess of the (R)-epoxide, whereas ‘picket’ iron-porphyrins bearing the same amino acid have led to a 10–20% excess of the (S)-epoxide.

SINGLET OXYGEN GENERATION BY HEMATOPORPHYRIN IX, UROPORPHYRIN I and HEMATOPORPHYRIN DERIVATIVE AT 546 nm IN PHOSPHATE BUFFER and IN THE PRESENCE OF EGG PHOSPHATIDYLCHOLINE LIPOSOMES

Aleksander Blum、Leonard I. Grossweiner1985-01-01Photochemistry and Photobiology

Abstract— The quantum yield of singlet oxygen generation (φ) was measured at 546 nm with the p ‐nitrosodimethylaniline (RNO) method. The results obtained in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer (PB) were: φ(HP) = 0.44 ± 0.05: φ= 0.71 ± 0.07: φ(HpD‐A) = 0.06 ± 0.02. The value of φ was constant from 3 to 67 μM , attributed to the do…

Theoretical analysis and fabrication of antireflection coatings on laser-diode facets

Tadashi Saitoh、T. Mukai、Osamu Mikami1985-01-01Journal of Lightwave Technology

Reflectivity of an antireflection-(AR) coated laser-diode (LD) facet is analyzed on the basis of a slab waveguide model and an angular spectrum approach. The reflectivities of single- and double-layer AR coatings on 1.55-μm GaInAsP/InP LD's are numerically calculated. Optimum film parameters, such as thickness and ref…

The effect of the central metal atom on the photodynamic activity of phthalocyanine dyes has been estimated by cytotoxicity to cultured Chinese hamster cells. Chloroaluminium phthalocyanine,, followed by the Zn- derivate, were found to be the only active dyes. In parallel it was found that visible light (615 +/- 10 nm…

Calculation of the second-order electronic polarizabilities of some organic molecules. Part 1

Vincent J. Docherty、David Pugh、John Morley1985-01-01Journal of the Chemical Society Faraday Transactions 2 Molecular and Chemical Physics

A version of the CNDO/S method has been re-parametrized by correlating computed and measured dipole moments and transition wavelengths for a range of organic conjugated molecules. The method has then been used to calculate the hyperpolarizability tensor, βijk, in the form related to second-harmonic generation, for an…

6-dimensional properties of Al0.86Mn0.14 alloy

Pavel Kalugin、A. Yu. Kitayev、Leonid Levitov1985-01-01Journal de Physique Lettres

The general properties of the phases with the icosahedral point group and long-range orientational order are considered. 6 Goldstone modes — 3 phonons and 3 phasons — are shown to exist. A model for the microscopic structure — a 6-D crystal — is proposed, and phason modes are discussed in this framework. Bravais latti…

Cholesteric to cholesteric phase transitions in liquid crystals

Helmut R. Brand、Harald Pleiner1985-01-01Journal de Physique Lettres

We discuss the phase transitions which can occur between two different cholesteric phases and we present general symmetry arguments why this transition has to be always of the first order. We derive the macroscopic dynamics close to the phase transition and we propose an experiment to shift the critical temperature wh…

Weighted least squares estimation of background in EELS imaging

Thierry Pun、James Ellis、Murray Eden1985-01-01Journal of Microscopy

In quantitative Electron Energy Loss Spectrometry, a weighted least squares estimation should theoretically be used to estimate the background law below core edge energy, since the variances of the data vary. However, it is found that proper weighting makes the above edge signal-to-noise ratio decrease rather than inc…

Methods for increasing drilling performance of the thermal spallation drilling system

Thomas Dey、Robert L. Kranz1985-01-01OSTI OAI (U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information)

Current thermal spallation drilling methods offer advantages in performance and cost over conventional rotary methods. We have analyzed the mechanics of the thermal spallation process and found that heat transfer from the hot gases to the rock is the key process for limiting better penetration rates. Increasing the op…

Notch sensitivity of graphite materials for VHTR.

Haruo Kawakami1985-01-01Journal of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan / Atomic Energy Society of Japan

Notch effects on strength were investigated for IG-11 and PGX graphite, which were promising materials for core structures of an experimental VHTR in Japan. Notch sensitivity in tensile strength tests decreased as notch radius decreased. Notch sensitivity of IG-11 was higher than that of PGX. Compressive fracturse of…
