Formation of a decagonal quasicrystal in Al 70 Pd 30- x Mn x alloys ( x =8-20) and its structure were examined by X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. The decagonal quasicrystal is formed as a coexisting phase with an icosahedral phase in the composition range of x =1…

Ice crystals growing vertically upwards in quiescent ultrapure water have been investigated at small subcoolings in the range of 0.035 T1.0 K. At subcooling less than 0.35 K, dendritic tips split and the tip radius ${\mathit{R}}_{2}$ drops because two tips replace one when viewed from the basal plane. The growth veloc…

Reaction of tran.s-4-alkyloxy-4′-stilbazoles (n-OPhVPy) with silver dodecylsulphate (AgDOS) led to the complexes [Ag(n-OPhVPy)2][DOS] which showed thermotropic mesomorphism. All homologues from methyloxy (n=1) to dodecyloxy (n=12) have been synthesised. The complexes showed a nematic phase at short chain lengths, but…

Effects of intrinsic defects on defect formation by excimer-laser irradiation were examined in synthetic silica glasses prepared by different methods. In samples containing oxygen-deficient centers (ODC's), laser-induced E' centers were stable at room temperature. In contrast, in samples heat treated in ${\mathrm{H}}_…

The two‐phase field involves a ZrO 2 ‐TiO 2 solid solution containing no more than 4 mol% TiO 2 , and a BaTiO 3 ‐BaZrO 3 solid solution containing a maximum of 75 mol% BaTiO 3 . The field narrows above 1300°C, probably because of the intrusion of a liquid‐phase field into the ternary, beginning near the BaO‐TiO 2 edge.
