A general model and analytical results have been derived to obtain laser-induced temperature rise in substrates with periodic multilayer structures. The substrate can be equivalent to a homogeneous substrate with anisotropic thermal conductivity, if the dimension of the periodic structure is much smaller than the lase…

By using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) to obtain chemical information from the fractured surfaces of rapidly quenched and sintered NdFeB magnets, it is found that the Nd-rich phases in the grain boundaries are different in these two kinds of magnets. In rapidly quenched NdFeB magnets, the Nd-rich phase is mainly N…

It is argued that the sintering and densification of Si3N4 based ceramics, using transition metal or rare earth metal oxide additives, can be described as an electronic mechanism involving a transfer of electrons into the Si3N4–SiO2 valence band: this is consistent with a recently proposed model of bonding at metal/ce…

Abstract The feasibility of combining selective reduction of nitric oxide by ammonia, or nitric oxide oxidation by methanol, with partial flue gas condensation has been studied in the laboratory. It was demonstrated that both combinations may result in high removal efficiencies for nitric oxide and sulfur dioxide. Hig…

Abstract The interaction of poly(ethylene glycol) with some salts of alkali‐earth metals (Mg(ClO 4 ) 2 , BaCl 2 , SrCl 2 , SrBr 2 and CaCl 2 ) in methanolic solutions was investigated by electroconductivity, viscometry, X‐ray diffractometry and NMR. It was established that the conformation of macromolecules is strongl…

Statistical-thermodynamic calculations have been combined with the results of high-temperature Knudsen-effusion studies of the vaporization of Si2Te3 to calculate the thermodynamic properties of SiTe(g) from T→0 to T=2000 K. The dissociation enthalpy D○m(SiTe, T→0) is (448±8) kJ⋅mol−1; its value is discussed vis-a-vis…

Abstract A protoporphyrin IX derivative having a phospholipid residue (lipid-porphyrin) was synthesized. The lipid-porphyrin itself formed an oval multilamellar vesicle in an aqueous medium. The spectral features of the lipid-porphyrin vesicle indicated a stacked configuration of the porphyrin moiety.

Analysis of net and bottle samples from the southern Gulf of Mexico allowed documentation of the morphological variation exhibited by 201 chains of the planktonic diatom Chaetoceros diversus Cleve. Considerable variation existed in the length (i.e. number of cells) and curvature of chains, dimensions of individual cel…

Nd/sub 5/Fe/sub 17/ (also referred to as A/sub 2/-phase) is prepared by rapid-quenching and subsequent annealing. Due to the fine, homogeneous distribution of the elements in the melt-spun ribbons, only a short reaction time is required in the annealing treatment. The samples are almost single-phase, as revealed by X-…

The magnetization of a MnFeAs/sub y/P/sub 1-y/ system for y=0.275 and y=0.30 is measured under a static magnetic field up to 28 T at temperatures from 4.2 to 400 K. Field induced phase transitions are observed, and the critical points are found on (B, T) phase diagrams. In the case of y=0.275, the pressure measurement…
