The Dynamic Response of Graphite Fiber-Epoxy Laminates at High Shear Strain Rates

Susana Maria Werner、C. K. H. Dharan1986-07-01Journal of Composite Materials

The split Hopkinson bar was used to determine the stress, strain and strain rate response of woven graphite-epoxy laminates during high shear strain rate deformation. The specimens were oriented and tested in both interlaminar shear and in transverse shear at strain rates ranging from 6000 to 18000 sec -1 . The result…

The pH dependence of the mechanism of reaction of hydrogen peroxide with a nonaggregating, non-mu-oxo dimer-forming iron (III) porphyrin in water.

Thomas C. Bruice、Matthias F. Zipplies、William A. Lee1986-07-01Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

The reaction of hydrogen peroxide with 5, 10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dimethyl-3-sulfonatophenyl)porphinato- iron(III) hydrate [(P)FeIII(H2O)] has been investigated in water between pH 1 and pH 12. The water-soluble (P)FeIII(H2O) neither aggregates nor forms a mu-oxo dimer. The pH dependence and rate-limiting second-order r…

Conversion of Cellulose I to Stable Cellulose III

L. Y. Yatsu、Timothy A. Calamari、Ruth R. Benerito1986-07-01Textile Research Journal

Cotton cellulose in fiber, yarn, or fabric form was converted from cellulose I to the cellulose III polymorph. Excellent conversion to III was obtained by immersing cotton (cellulose I) in liquid ammonia at room temperature, subjecting it to pressures from 689.5 to 11,721.5 kPa (100 to 1700 psi) while saturated with a…

Polarized anisotropic photoluminescence of laser-related transitions in YAlO3:Nd and YAlO3:Er and line broadening by resonant lattice phonons

B. Dischler、H. Ennen1986-07-01Journal of Applied Physics

Polarized anisotropic photoluminescence spectra are presented for the 4F−43/2 I11/2 transitions of YA1O3:Nd3+ and for the 4S3/2–4I9/2 transitions of YAlO3:Er3+. It is shown that differences in the individual linewidth are caused by different degrees of resonance between lattice phonons and sublevel spacings. This mode…

Influence of hydrogen bonding on the properties of elastomers and elastomeric blends

Reimund Stadler、Josef Burgert1986-07-01Die Makromolekulare Chemie

Abstract Polybutadienes and polyisoprene are modified using 4‐phenyl‐1,2,4‐triazoline‐3,5‐dione. The resulting urazole moieties give rise to the formation of hydrogen bonds. From the temperature dependence of the dilute solution viscosity as well as from GPC it can be deduced that intra‐ and intermolecular hydrogen bo…

Mineral weathering processes in podzolic soils on granitic materials and their implications for surface water acidification

M. J. Wilson1986-07-01Journal of the Geological Society

Many areas where concern has arisen over the recent acidification of their surface waters contain podzolic soils developed upon granitic materials. The mineral weathering processes in these soils are reviewed and the ways in which such processes could be altered by acid deposition are considered. The most weatherable…

Response of Spring Wheat, Barley, and Oats to Chloride in Potassium Chloride Fertilizers1

P. E. Fixen、R. H. Gelderman、James R. Gerwing 等 4 位作者1986-07-01Agronomy Journal

Abstract Cereal grain yield response to KCI fertilization has been reported on high K‐testing soils in the Northern Plains. Other field studies have demonstrated that wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) yield increases to CI fertilization occurred where disease incidence was high. Therefore, field experiments on high K‐test…

The electron distribution in silicon. A comparison between experiment and theory

Mark A. Spackman1986-07-01Acta Crystallographica Section A Foundations of Crystallography

Deformation and valence-electron densities in silicon are derived via Fourier summation and multipole refinement of highly accurate measurements of X-ray structure factors. These results provide a new perspective for the comparison between theory and experiment. The model electron density derived from experiment is in…

Diverse effects of the MalE-LacZ hybrid protein on Escherichia coli cell physiology

The hybrid protein between the periplasmic maltose-binding protein and the cytoplasmic beta-galactosidase (the MalE-LacZ hybrid protein) was previously shown to block the export of envelope proteins when synthesized in large amounts. Now we show that the hybrid protein exerts another major effect on the cell, that is,…

Solubility of Water in Albite-Melt Determined by the Weight-Loss Method

D. L. Hamilton、Susan Oxtoby1986-07-01The Journal of Geology

A table of water solubility in albite melt at pressure up to 8 kbars is presented. These data have only been published previously in graph form; the weight-loss method was used to determine these solubilities. A recent paper by Dingwell and others critical of the weight-loss method is discussed.

Rheological properties of liquid‐crystalline side‐group polymers in the isotropic, nematic, and smectic states

Rudolf Zentel、Jishan Wu1986-07-01Die Makromolekulare Chemie

Abstract The melt viscosity of seven liquid‐crystalline side‐group polymers with polyacrylate and polysiloxane main chains is measured as a function of shear rate and temperature. In the isotropic and also in the nematic phase none or only a very small dependence of the melt viscosity on shear rate is observed for the…
