The microscopic model in which nodes interacting with each other are statistical systems is introduced. The nodes conditions are connected with a string of distinct microscopic configurations and depend on external parameters (pressure and temperature). In this model the consequent description of first- and second-ord…

Time-dependent density functional theory is extended to include dissipative systems evolving under a master equation, providing a Hamiltonian treatment for molecular electronics. For weak electric fields, the isothermal conductivity is shown to match the adiabatic conductivity, thereby recovering the Landauer result.

We used an epoxysilane/aminosilane coating deposited from an aqueous solution to strengthen flat glass. We studied film formation, interfacial and mechanical properties of the film. The film is highly cross-linked with a 6 GPa Young's modulus and good adhesion. Our results suggest that crack face bridging accounts for…

Despite great advances in computation, materials design is still science fiction. The construction of structure-property relations on the quantum scale will turn computational empiricism into true design.

Magnetic nanoparticles have been advocated for use in magnetic resonance (MR) image enhancement and as bio-carriers in biological systems for many years. However it is only in recent years that the fields of nanotechnology, materials science and cell biology have combined to enable us to fully comprehend the potential…

A general methodology that utilizes confined mesoporous silica as template for preparing highly ordered mesostructured nanowires and nanowire arrays is developed. The prepared Ag, Ni, and Cu 2 O nanowires, with unprecedented mesostructures of coaxially multilayered helical, and stacked-donut structures, have the uniqu…

Molecular dynamics simulations based on an empirical potential energy surface were used to study iron catalyzed nucleation and growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The simulations show that SWNTs grow from iron-carbide particles at temperatures between 800 and 1400 K, whereas graphene sheets encapsulate t…

This paper describes the synthesis of silver nanoparticles in a continuous flow tubular microreactor using silver pentafluoropropionate as a single-phase reactant precursor. This precursor can be thermally reduced in isoamyl ether to form silver nanoparticles in the presence of trioctylamine. The reaction is suitable…
