A chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method using local infrared laser heating is developed for synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on suspending microstructures. Adjusting the laser power and the focused beam spot enables local illumination and heating of suspending microstructures to high temperature for CNT growth. R…

With the increasing use of molecular simulation to understand deformation mechanisms in transition metals, it is important to assess how well the simulations reproduce physical behavior both near equilibrium and under more extreme conditions. In particular, it is important to examine whether simulations predict unusua…

The sulfide-tellurides Ba(3)Cu(17-x)(S,Te)(11) and Ba(3)Cu(17-x)(S,Te)(11.5) were synthesized from the elements in stoichiometric ratios heated to 1073 K, followed by slow cooling to 873 K over 100 h. Ba(3)Cu(17-x)(S,Te)(11) is isostructural to Ba(3)Cu(17-x)(Se,Te)(11) when [S] > [Te], space group R ̅3m, with lattice…

The conductivity is calculated for dominant charged-impurity scattering in graphenes within a self-consistent Born approximation. In monolayer graphene, environmental dielectric screening is shown to change their effective potential from short to long range. In bilayer graphene, effects of band-gap opening due to asym…

In this paper we report electrochemical investigations of the influence of organic solvents dissolved in aqueous solution on the permeability of nanoporous films derived from a cylinder-forming polystyrene-poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer (CF-PS-b-PMMA). The nanoporous films (ca. 30 nm in pore diameter) wer…

Conjugated benzenoid aromatics with large inner cavities and alkyl side chains self-associate to produce dimers in solution and fibrous materials in the solid state. The self-association is enthalpically and entropically driven. The compound forms a 1:3 charge-transfer (CT) complex with 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF)…

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been synthesized with various techniques of which the most common ones are laser ablation, electric arc discharge, and chemical vapor deposition. These methods produce CNTs with different characteristics, sometimes involving complex experimental setups that add to their cost of production.…

The physical properties of the glass depend on the procedure used to produce the glass. In particular, if the glass is obtained through the variation of external thermodynamic parameters, the specific way in which the parameters are varied (thermodynamic history) has influence on the final properties. In this work, we…

Metal-ion-promoted electron transfer was observed for compounds 1 and 2 based on the absorption and ESR spectral studies. These results imply that spatially adjacent arrangement of TTF and quinone units in 1 and 2 due to the calix[4]arene platform is favorable for the intramolecular electron transfer.
