Ultraviolet (UV) blocking filters are needed for atomic flux imaging in environments where high levels of ultraviolet radiation are present. Freestanding gratings are a promising candidate for UV filtering. They have a high aspect ratio (∼13), narrow (∼40 nm) slots, and effectively block UV radiation. The grating fabr…

On the influence of reactant’s induced surface transformations in the behavior of a heterogeneously catalyzed dimer–monomer reaction model

Ezequiel V. Albano1998-11-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

A surface reaction model for the catalyzed reaction A+(12)B2→AB is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Motivated by experiments on the catalytic oxidation of CO on certain Pt surfaces; i.e., A≡CO, B2≡O2, and AB≡CO2; it is assumed that the catalyst surface undergoes reactant’s induced reversible phase transiti…

Magnetic Field Dependence of Solvent Proton Relaxation by Solute Dysprosium(III) Complexes

Kenneth E. Kellar、Sigrid L. Fossheim、Seymour H. Koenig1998-11-01Investigative Radiology

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Many magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents are Gd(III)-based; its half-filled f-shell has an S-ground state and hence a long electronic relaxation time, leading to comparably large effects on 1/T1 and 1/T2 of water protons with no shift in the water-proton resonance frequency. 1/T1 and 1/T2…

Preparation of Ti 3 SiC 2 by Electron‐Beam‐Ignited Solid‐State Reaction

F. Goesmann、Roland Wenzel、Rainer Schmid‐Fetzer1998-11-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

This paper describes a novel way to prepare the ternary phase Ti 3 SiC 2 in a single‐step procedure that we call electron‐beam‐ignited solid‐state reaction (EBI‐SSR). The preparation route is discussed by means of an isothermal section of the Ti‐Si‐C phase diagram. Properties such as the Vickers hardness and the elect…

A series of planned tritium release experiments into the Tritium Systems Test Assembly (TSTA) tritium processing rooms (3000 m3), were performed under the US-Japan collaboration program at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). These experiments were carried out to acquire data on the behavior of tritium in an actual…

Kinetics of Thin‐Film Reactions of Nickel Oxide with Alumina: I, (0001) and {1120} Reaction Couples

Paul G. Kotula、C. Barry Carter1998-11-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Solid‐state reactions between thin films of nickel oxide (NiO) that had been grown on four different orientations of alpha‐alumina (alpha‐Al 2 O 3 ), each with an intermediate layer of spinel, have been studied by using electron microscopy. The starting reaction geometry consists of a nickel aluminate (NiAl 2 O 4 ) bu…

Estimating Lysozyme Crystallization Growth Rates and Solubility from Isothermal Microcalorimetry

Patricia Darcy、John M. Wiencek1998-11-01Acta Crystallographica Section D Biological Crystallography

A microcalorimetric technique has been developed to measure crystal-growth kinetics and enthalpies of crystallization. The enthalpy of crystallization of hen egg-white lysozyme in 0.1 M acetate buffer at pH 4.6 was determined at 287 K using this technique. The enthalpies were directly measured to be -14.3 +/- 2.0 and…

Addition of tungsten to duplex stainless steels (DSS) is known to suppress formation of the brittle secondary phases that may have a negative effect on general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) properties. The effects of tungsten addition to DSS on microstructural, electrochemical, and SCC properties were…

Spin ordering in Fe3-x Mn x Si Heusler alloys

P. Mohn、E. Supanetz1998-11-01Philosophical Magazine B

Applying the augmented spherical wave method, the Heusler alloy Fe3-x Mn x Si is studied for integer values of x where it forms fairly well ordered intermetallic compounds. In our calculation we allow for non-collinear spin ordering. It is found that the magnetic ground state changes from a ferromagnet for Fe3Si to a…

Bubble dynamics in a compressible shear-thinning liquid

E-A Brujan1998-11-01Fluid Dynamics Research

The radial dynamics of a spherical gas bubble in a compressible shear-thinning liquid is studied by means of a singular perturbation method to first order in the bubble-wall Mach number. The Williamson rheological model is adopted to describe the shear-thinning characteristic of liquid viscosity. The equation of motio…

Abstract The colored form of photochromic 1,2-bis(5-hydroxymethyl-2-methyl-3-thienyl)hexafluorocyclopentene was resolved into enantiomers by HPLC. The absolute stereochemistry of an enantiomer was determined on its bis(4-chlorobenzoate). The CD spectra and optical rotation of the resolved colored form were measured.
