ダイヤモンドは超高圧安定相であることから大型結晶の合成が困難であり、応用は工具など硬度を利用した用途に限られていたが、大きさとコストの課題をクリアできれば、その用途は計り知れない。特に究極の半導体と称され、半導体開発ロードマップ上では、炭化ケイ素SiCや窒化ガリウムGaNの次に位置している。高温動作が可能であり、物質中最高の熱伝導率が活かせるパワーデバイスが実現すれば、例えば、車載用インバータを冷却フリー化でき、低電力損失と冷却システムの軽量化の両面から省エネに貢献できる。本稿では、大型化が可能な気相合成による単結晶ダイヤモンド合成と難加工材であるダイヤモンドをウェハ形状にする技術開発について述べる。

分散媒体として水を用い,有機変性させることなくモンモリロナイト(MMT)をポリビニルアルコール(PVA)中に充てんした。得られたPVA/MMTナノ複合材料の構造を走査型電子顕微鏡;,X線回折により評価し,引張り試験により力学物性を検討した。その結果,複合材料中でMMTは層剥離し,ナノ次元で分散していることが明らかとなった。また,PVAフィルムと比較してナノ複合材料では,弾性率・強度が大きく増加した。X線回折法を用いて,外部応力を付加した際にMMT結晶(060)面に生じるひずみを測定したところ,複合材料全体に加えた応力の61倍がMMTに集中しており,これがナノコンポジッ卜の補強性の発現をもたらしていると考えられた。
