Wolfgang Bünder、Erwin Weiß1978-11-01Zeitschrift für Naturforschung B

Abstract The dark brown anti-ferromagnetic modification of (C 5 H 5 ) 2 Mn crystallizes ortho-rhombic, space group Pna2 1 (or Pnam) with a= 1402.7(2), 6 = 582.9(1), c = 996.5(1) pm and Z = 4. It forms polymer chains with a zigzag arrangement of C 5 H 5 Mn units and additional bridging C 5 H 5 -rings between adjacent i…

WASHING METHODS FOR CHLORIDE REMOVAL FROM MARINE IRON ARTIFACTS

Neil A. North、C. Pearson1978-11-01Studies in Conservation

The mechanisms by which chlorides are removed from marine iron artifacts during washing processes were investigated. By comparing the decomposition rates of FeOCl and the chloride extraction rates it was shown that, under most conditions, the chloride removal process is diffusion controlled. The implications of this w…

Thermal radiation from metal surfaces

A. J. Sievers1978-11-01Journal of the Optical Society of America

The thermal radiation from metals is calculated by including the Holstein processes of phonon-assisted and surface-assisted scattering in the free-electron model. This approach provides a fairly accurate description of the experimentally measured total emissivity of good conductors in terms of the dc resistivity and t…

Mechanical α‐dispersion and interaction in filled polystyrene and polymethylmethacrylate

K. Iisaka、K. Shiba Yama1978-11-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Dynamic mechanical properties of polystyrene (PS) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) filled with glass beads and mica flakes have been investigated. The α‐dispersion temperature ( T α ) increases with filler content in each system. The increase in T α is larger for PMMA than for PS in the case of the same fill…

ESR studies of hydrogen hyperfine spectra in irradiated vitreous silica

J. Vitko1978-11-01Journal of Applied Physics

Various means of deuteration have been used to establish the hydrogenic origin of both the 119-G and 74-G hyperfine doublets observed in a variety of irradiated vitreous silica samples. The g values of both these defects appear inconsistent with an earlier model in which these lines were attributed to a hole localized…

Insulating phase ofV2O3: An attempt at a realistic calculation

C. Castellani、C. R. Natoli、J. Ranninger1978-11-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The problem of the highly correlated electron gas ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ consisting of a filled ${a}_{1g}$ and a quarterly full ${e}_{g}$ band is treated on the basis of a Hartree-Fock calculation with spin and orbit unrestriction. The values of the effective hopping integrals which include covalency eff…

Metal-insulator transition in pure and Cr-dopedV2O3

C. Castellani、C. R. Natoli、J. Ranninger1978-11-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

On the basis of our theoretical examination of the insulating state of ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ reported in the preceding two papers and the experimental results of NMR and susceptibility measurements of the metallic phase, we conjecture the highly correlated electron-gas character in this latter phase of…

High-pressure investigation of the reentrant nematic bilayer smectic-Atransition

P. E. Cladis、R. K. Bogardus、D. Aadsen1978-11-01Physical Review A

We find that certain cyano Schiff bases and cyanobiphenyls with alkyl or alkoxy end groups exhibiting a bilayer smectic-$A$ phase, also exhibit a reentrant nematic phase at high pressure. A tentative model of the bilayer smectic-$A$ phase and the mechanism whereby the reentrant transition may occur is presented.

Metal–insulator transitions

Sir Nevill Mott1978-11-01Physics Today

Research on metal–insulator transitions is at the moment quite fashionable. In many materials the electrical behavior changes from metallic to nonmetallic when the pressure, temperature or magnetic field is varied or (as in alloys) when the composition is varied, and the theoretical description of these processes is q…

Is there an N3− ion in the crystal structure of the ionic conductor lithium nitride (Li3N)?

H.‐J. Schulz、Karlheinz Schwarz1978-11-01Acta Crystallographica Section A

The structure parameters of Li 3 N in the temperature range -120 to 20°C were refined both for neutral atoms (Li 0 and N 0 ) and for ions (Li + and N 3- ). For N 3- new scattering curves were used which were calculated by applying stabilizing Watson-sphere potentials for different radii. All structure parameters depen…
