Abstract Fracture toughness values of phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK‐C) at 190°C were determined by two different methods, i.e. the conventional crack growth method and the crack stress whitening zone method, which show consistent results. This indicates that the crack stress whitening zone method can be used…

A new series of optically active compounds have been prepared using 4,4″-terphenyldicarboxylic acid and S-2-alcoxypropanols-1. These are Sm*C, SmA and N* chemically stable - especially with regard to racemization and UV-light compounds with a small PS value, high twisting power and left handedness of helix.

A beamline for macromolecular crystallography has been designed for the ALS. The source will be a 37-pole wiggler with a 2-T on-axis peak field. The wiggler will illuminate three beamlines, each accepting 3 mrad of horizontal aperture. The central beamline will primarily be used for multiple-wavelength anomalous dispe…

Lyotropic micellar nematic and smectic phases observed in the mixture of sodium oleate and glacial acetic acid has been studied by X-ray and optical methods. It is found that a nematic phase is observed with small concentration of sodium oleate at higher temperatures. Smectic A and Smectic E phases also occur at lower…

Abstract The resonance Raman spectrum of bis(isomaleonitriledithiolato)nickelate(II) was investigated in order to assess the extent of the electronic delocalization within the chromophore. Previous results for the isomeric species bis(maleonitriledithiolato)nickelate(II) indicated an extensive delocalization involving…

A linear stability analysis of the undulatory instability of the nematic-isotropic (N-I) interface under a vertical magnetic field is presented. It is shown that the boundary conditions on the lower surface of the nematic layer have a very significant influence on the threshold characteristics. Furthermore, in the cas…

A simple method for the preparation of monophasic β‐SiAlON using nitridation of Si and AIN with an oxygen partial pressure of 10 ‐4 atm is described. The effect of the AIN/Si ratio in the initial mixture on the formation of β‐SiAlON is discussed. The likely mechanism of the formation of β‐SiAlON is outlined.
