Deposition of conducting thin films of organometallic monomers by plasma polymerization

R. K. Sadhir、H. E. Saunders1985-11-01Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology A Vacuum Surfaces and Films

There has been a growing interest in depositing metal-containing thin films by plasma polymerization for various applications. These films have been deposited by two methods (a) by plasma polymerization of volatile organometallic monomers, and (b) by simultaneous plasma etching and polymerization in the same system, r…

The application of gas barrier and thermal expansion techniques to study structural changes on annealing

P. S. Holden、G. A. J. Orchard、I. M. Ward1985-11-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract Changes occur in the structure of drawn polyethylene when it is annealed at temperatures close to that of the drawing process. Measurements have been made of the oxygen barrier properties and of the thermal expansion coefficient in the draw direction on samples over a wide draw ratio range both before and aft…

Grain boundary dislocation structures in symmetric [001] tilt boundaries in aluminum

J. S. Liu、R. W. Balluffi1985-11-01Philosophical magazine. A/Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties

Grain boundary dislocation (GBD) structures in symmetric [001] tilt boundaries in Al bicrystals of controlled geometry have been studied using transmission electron microscopy. The intrinsic GBD structure of near-Σ1, Σ5 and Σ13 boundaries consisted of families of straight edge GBDs with Burgers vectors b=〈100〉 or 1/2〈…

Synthesis of 5‐(β‐D‐ribofuranosyl)‐1,2,4‐oxadiazole‐3‐carboxamide

William J. Hennen、Roland K. Robins1985-11-01Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry

Abstract The title compound was synthesized in three steps from ethoxycarbonylformamide oxime (5) and 3,4,6‐tri‐ O ‐acetyl‐2,5‐anhydroallonyl chloride (4b) in 62% overall yield. An acid catalyzed de‐esterification was required to prevent a facile base catalyzed elimination reaction.

Study of spall and recompaction of ceramics using a double-impact technique

D. Yaziv、Stephan Bless、Z. Rosenberg1985-11-01Journal of Applied Physics

A new plate impact technique for studying the dynamic properties of shock-damaged materials has been developed. The technique is based on impacting the specimen with two flyer plates which are separated by a small gap. Impact of the first plate causes spall in the target. Impact of the second plate closes the spall. T…

The interaction between a dislocation loop and a gas bubble

B. Burton1985-11-01Philosophical magazine. A/Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties

During irradiation, dislocation loops, bubbles and voids are often formed in crystalline materials. The presence of these defects gives rise to irradiation hardening. At elevated temperatures, the strength may be dictated by the balance between the rate of creation of these defects by irradiation and their rate of the…

Inorganic Glass Forming Systems as Intumescent Flame Retardants for Organic Polymers

Ronald E. Myers、Eugene Licursi1985-11-01Journal of Fire Sciences

This paper describes the development of several inorganic-based, non- halogenated, intumescent flame retardant additives for organic polymers. Low melting phosphate-sulfate glasses, borate/carbonate glass forming systems and ammonium pentaborate are discussed with respect to their role in converting otherwise flammabl…

Effects of Water Quality Parameters on the Corrosion of Galvanized Steel

Rodolfo A. Pisigan、J. Edward Singley1985-11-01American Water Works Association

Jar tests and a circulating water system were used to evaluate the effect of water quality parameters, in particular the Langelier index (SI), on the corrosion of galvanized steel. Since waters with a positive SI were sometimes found to be at least as corrosive as waters with a negative SI, especially if the effect of…

Dopant‐Free Ultraviolet‐Sensitive Calcium Aluminate Glasses

Hideo Hosono、Koji Yamazaki、Yoshihiro Abe1985-11-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Dopant‐free calcium aluminate glasses are very sensitive to ultraviolet radiation; new optical absorption bands rapidly appear around 400 nm on illumination and are easily bleached when the glass is heated to >100° to 250°C. This coloringbleaching process is reversible when the illumination and heating cycles are r…

Edoardo Garrone、L. Battezzati1985-11-01Philosophical Magazine B

For a few glass-forming metallic systems whose specific heat is known for both the crystal and the liquid phase, together with the heat of fusion, the thermodynamic quantities trapped at the glass transition T g have been computed by extrapolation of the liquid data. The difference in enthalpy ΔH g is reasonably well…
