We present the design of a general-purpose convection chamber that produces a stable environment for studying the growth of ice crystals from water vapor in the presence of a background gas. Crystals grow in free fall inside the chamber, where the temperature and supersaturation are well characterized and surprisingly…

Si-doped ZnO can be synthesized on the surface of the early grown Zn 2 SiO 4 nanostructures and form core/shell coaxial heterostructure nanobelts with an epitaxial orientation relationship. A parallel interface with a periodicity array of edge dislocations and an inclined interface without dislocations can be formed.…

Abstract The highly dispersed property of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)-coated cerium oxide nanoparticles can be retained for a long time in polar solvents. In this 13C CP/MAS NMR study, it is revealed that the surface PVP forms cross-linked structures during the synthesis of the nanoparticles.

We theoretically show that the giant magneto-optical Kerr effects are induced by the electronic structure of half-metallic ferromagnetism in the perovskite BiNiO 3 with the orthorhombic structure by first-principles calculation. A Kerr rotation is up to 1.28° at 1.87 eV, which is comparative to the recognized maximum…

The grafted copolymer of natural rubber (NR) and maleic anhydride (MA) was synthesized in a solution state by using ultraviolet radiation. The NR-g-MA was characterized using infrared (IR) technique. The prepared NR-g-MA was added to a 50/50 blend of NR and acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer (NBR) as a compatibilizer.…

Crystalline interfacial water layers have been observed at room temperature on both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces − in air and subaquatically. Their implication in biology (and evolution) was postulated in a visionary paper in 1971 by Szent Györgyi. Today, they are believed to play a fundamental role in protein…

Commercial medium density fiberboard (MDF) was produced using rubberwood and oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) based on oven dried weight. Relative humidities of 65%, 93% with fixed temperature at 20°C, and normal condition was used for storage of the boards. The effects of storage time and relative humidity of MDF w…

The capacity degradation mechanism of the Ti−V-based hydrogen storage electrode alloys was systematically investigated from the viewpoint of intrinsic/extrinsic degradation for the first time. The oxidation/corrosion of the active components and the appearance of the irreversible hydrogen were found to be the two domi…

The influence of untreated and benzoylated oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) short fiber loading on the mechanical properties of the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composite was studied. Benzoylated OPEFB was produced by mixing OPEFB with NaOH solution and agitating vigorously with benzoyl chloride. The PVC resin, variou…

The magnetic properties of monomeric bis(indenyl)chromium(II) complexes are sensitive to the relative orientation of the ligands (staggered, eclipsed, or gauche), regardless of whether such a conformation is imposed by sterically bulky substituents or is a consequence of crystal-packing forces. The staggered monomethy…

Singlet oxygen, 1 O 2 (a 1 Δ g ), is efficiently deactivated by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) having diameters in the range d ≈ 1 − 1.6 nm. This is evidenced by quenching of the near-infrared emission of photosensitized 1 O 2 in water−surfactant dispersions of SWNTs. The observed quenching rate is close to th…
