Monazite Coatings on SiC Fibers II: Oxidation Protection

P. Mogilevsky、Emmanuel E. Boakye、Randall S. Hay 等 5 位作者2006-10-02Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The effect of monazite on the oxidation of SiC was studied in laboratory and dry air. Monazite inhibited the oxidation of Tyranno‐SA™, Tyranno‐ZX™, Sylramic, and Hi‐Nicalon SiC fibers. Oxidation of pure chemical vapor deposition SiC and undoped SiC single crystals was not inhibited by monazite. Dry oxidation of both u…

Influence of electron injection on the photoresponse of ZnO homojunction diodes

O. Lopatiuk‐Tirpak、Leonid Chernyak、L. J. Mandalapu 等 8 位作者2006-10-02Applied Physics Letters

Forward bias electron injection into the p side of a p-n homojunction was shown to result in an improved response of the ZnO photodiodes. Injection of about 25C of charge yielded a nearly 2.5-fold increase of photocurrent at 350nm. This improvement was correlated with the increase of the diffusion length of minority e…

Commercially available SiC fibers were coated with monazite (LaPO 4 ) using a continuous vertical coater at 1100°C. Coated fibers were heat treated in dry air, argon, and laboratory air at 1200°C for 1–20 h. The tensile strengths of uncoated and coated fibers were measured and evaluated before and after heat treatment…

Large piezoelectric strains from polarization graded ferroelectrics

Shan Zhong、Z.–G. Ban、S. P. Alpay 等 4 位作者2006-10-02Applied Physics Letters

The potential applications of polarization graded ferroelectrics as high performance sensors and actuators are theoretically investigated. A static bending can be expected in polarization graded ferroelectric plates, forming a vertical displacement. This is due to the built-in strain gradient that arises from the grad…

Satish Kumar、Graciela B. Blanchet、Mark S. Hybertsen 等 5 位作者2006-10-02Applied Physics Letters

A numerical technique that relies on modifying the organic semiconducting host with metallic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to increase the transconductance or, equivalently, reduce effective channel length (Leff) has recently been proposed. The authors use an extensive set of experimental data to analyze the performance of…

Tsali Cross、Rishi Raj、Somuri V. Prasad 等 5 位作者2006-10-02Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Polymer‐derived ceramics (PDCs) are a new class of ceramics that are obtained from direct pyrolysis of densely crosslinked polymers. In this article, we report the mechanical and tribological properties of silicon‐based PDCs. The density, the elastic modulus, the hardness, and the fracture toughness of silicon oxycarb…

Mechanisms for current-induced conductivity changes in a conducting polymer

Xin Xu、Richard A. Register、Stephen R. Forrest2006-10-02Applied Physics Letters

A layer of polyethylene dioxythiophene:polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDT:PSS) spun onto the surface of an inorganic semiconductor forms a highly asymmetric rectifying junction when a small current is applied and can be permanently open circuited with application of a high current density. This allows the polymer/semicon…

Multilayer thin films were prepared by the layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition method using a rhenium-containing hyperbranched polymer and poly[2-(3-thienyl)ethoxy-4-butylsulfonate] (PTEBS). The radii of gyration of the hyperbranched polymer in solutions with different salt concentrations were measured by laser light scat…

Experimental characterization of the mesoscale dislocation density tensor

B. C. Larson、Anter El–Azab、Wenge Yang 等 6 位作者2006-10-02The Philosophical Magazine A Journal of Theoretical Experimental and Applied Physics

The dislocation density tensor has been an important variable in the theoretical characterization of dislocations in deformed crystals since its introduction over 5 decades ago. However, the non-destructive, three-dimensional (3D) measurements of lattice rotations and elastic strain needed to determine dislocation den…

Detection of phospholipid-carbon nanotube translocation using fluorescence energy transfer

Sijie Lin、Gayatri Keskar、Yonnie Wu 等 9 位作者2006-10-02Applied Physics Letters

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and lysophospholipids readily assemble into supramolecular complexes in aqueous solutions. Upon light excitation the fluorescence of rhodamine-labeled lysophospholipids was redshifted and quenched due to the optical absorption of the SWNTs. Utilizing fluorescence energy transfer,…
