Radiation Effects on Pure Silica Core Optical Fibers by γ-Rays: Relation between 2 eV Band and Non-Bridging Oxygen Hole Centers

Kaya Nagasawa、Yutaka Hoshi、Yoshimichi Ohki 等 4 位作者1986-03-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

The defect center causing the 2 eV absorption band induced in pure silica core fibers by 60 Co γ-rays is discussed. The 2 eV band and non-bridging oxygen hole center (NBOHC, SI–O·) show almost the same thermal annealing characteristics. The peak wavelength of the 2 eV band in low-OH (≦6 ppm) fibers is 630 nm, but shif…

Strength‐Toughness Relations in Sintered and Isostatically Hot‐Pressed ZrO 2 ‐Toughened Al 2 O 3

Saburo Hori、Masahiro Yoshimura、Shigeyuki Sōmiya1986-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The fracture toughness of fine‐grained undoped ZrO 2 ‐toughened Al 2 O 3 (ZTA) was essentially unchanged by postsintering hot isostatic pressing and increased monotonically with ZrO 2 additions up to 25 wt%. The strength of ZTA with 5 to 15 wt% tetragonal ZrO 2 , which depended monotonically on the amount of ZrO 2 pre…

Methods of analysing morphology of kaolinites: relations between crystallographic and morphological properties

J. M. Cases、P. Cunin、Y. Grillett 等 5 位作者1986-03-01Clay Minerals

Abstract A study was made of the extent to which the lateral surfaces contribute to the surface area of five kaolinites of different crystallinities. Methods used included the low-temperature adsorption of N 2 and Ar as measured by a volumetric technique coupled with microcalorimetry, the interpretation of the adsorpt…

Melt motion in a Czochralski crystal puller with an axial magnetic field: isothermal motion

L.N. Hjellming、John S. Walker1986-03-01Journal of Fluid Mechanics

A magnetic field suppresses turbulence and thermal convection in a Czochralski crystal puller. The amounts and distributions of dopants and oxygen in the crystal are determined by the motion of the molten silicon during crystal growth. This paper presents analytical solutions for the melt motion in a Czochralski pulle…

Mutual orientation effects on electron transfer between porphyrins

Robert J. Cave、Paul Siders、R. A. Marcus1986-03-01The Journal of Physical Chemistry

Mutual orientation effects on the rate of nonadiabatic electron transfer between several diporphyrin pairs of experimental
\ninterest are examined. The electronic matrix element for electron transfer is calculated within a one-electron spheroidal
\nmodel for a variety of states and orientations which are relev…

Magnetic properties of Al-Si-Mn and Al-Mn quasicrystals and amorphous films

J. J. Hauser、HS Chen、J. V. Waszczak1986-03-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Unlike the orthorhombic phase, the icosahedral phase of ${\mathrm{Al}}_{86}$${\mathrm{Mn}}_{14}$ exhibits a local magnetic moment. The effective moment of icosahedral-phase Al-Mn and Al-Si-Mn alloys increases with Mn concentration up to a maximum of (1.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B}$). The amo…

In a prospective, randomized, double-blind study, 49 patients underwent lumbar myelography using iotrol (24 patients) or metrizamide (25 patients). The diagnostic imaging adequacy of iotrol was comparable with that of metrizamide. After iotrol myelography, adverse reactions were fewer, less severe, and of shorter dura…

Ferrierite from Tapu, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, and a crystal chemical study of known occurrences

Teruhiko Sameshima1986-03-01Mineralogical Magazine

Abstract Ferrierite has been found at Tapu, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, as a mineral vein with calcite in altered hornblende andesite lava of the Miocene Beeson's Island Volcanics. The ferrierite is low in SiO 2 (63.67%) and high in Al 2 O 3 (13.75%), MgO (3.48%), and BaO(2.35%). The large a axis and cell volum…

Claudia Sarmoria、Enrique M. Vallés、Douglas R. Miller1986-03-01Makromolekulare Chemie Macromolecular Symposia

Abstract Mathematical models of kinetically controlled random copolymerizations with intramolecular reactions have been developed for A 2 + B 2 and A 3 + B 2 type reactions, in which the B 2 monomer is long and flexible enough to have a Gaussian end‐to‐end distance. Concentrations of different molecular species are ca…

Stors: the sludge-to-oil reactor system

P.M. Molton、A.G. Fassbender、Brown1986-03-01OSTI OAI (U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information)

The Sludge-to-Oil Reactor System (STORS) continuously converted over 400 gallons (20% solids) of sewage sludge to oil during 100 hours of operation. About 80% of the energy in the sludge was recovered as an oil and char. The energy recovered was sufficient to make the STORS energy self-sufficient assuming the char is…
