We report the resistivity, thermopower, and dc susceptibility of R${\mathrm{NiO}}_{3}$ (R=La,Pr) ceramic samples for 1.4 K\ensuremath{\le}T\ensuremath{\le}300 K. The resistivity of ${\mathrm{LaNiO}}_{3}$ shows a ${\mathit{T}}^{2}$ dependence below 80 K and changes over to a ${\mathit{T}}^{1.5}$ dependence at higher te…

Jennifer A. Hodgdon、Frank H. Stillinger1993-07-01Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

The Stokes-Einstein relation D=${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{B}}$T/(C\ensuremath{\eta}a) (\ensuremath{\eta} is the shear viscosity; D is the diffusion constant; C=6\ensuremath{\pi} for no-slip and 4\ensuremath{\pi} for slip boundary conditions; a is the molecular diameter) holds over a wide temperature range in many liquids.…

Isolation and properties of a mutant of Escherichia coli with an insertional inactivation of the uspA gene, which encodes a universal stress protein

Thomas Nyström、Frederick C. Neidhardt1993-07-01Journal of Bacteriology

Cells of Escherichia coli increase greatly the synthesis of a small cytoplasmic protein as soon as the cell growth rate falls below the maximal growth rate supported by the medium, regardless of the condition inhibiting growth. The gene, designated uspA (universal stress protein A), encoding this protein has been clon…

Bovine seminal ribonuclease: structure at 1.9 Å resolution

L. Mazzarella、Sante Capasso、D. Demasi 等 6 位作者1993-07-01Acta Crystallographica Section D Biological Crystallography

The crystal structure of bovine seminal ribonuclease, a homodimeric enzyme closely related to pancreatic ribonuclease, has been refined at a nominal resolution of 1.9 A employing data collected on an electronic area detector. The final model consists of two chains containing 1990 non-H atoms, seven sulfate anions and…

Syntheses and properties of aromatic polyamides and polyimides derived from 9,9‐bis[4‐(p‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]fluorene

Chin‐Ping Yang、Jiun‐Hung Lin1993-07-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A Polymer Chemistry

Abstract 9,9‐Bis[4‐( p ‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]fluorene ( II ) was used as a monomer with various aromatic dicarboxylic acids and tetracarboxylic dianhydrides to synthesize polyamides and polyimides, respectively. The diamine II was derived by a nucleophilic substitution of 9,9‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)fluorene with p ‐chloro…

Alpha‐Decay‐Induced Amorphization in Complex Silicate Structures

William J. Weber1993-07-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Alpha decay in Cm‐doped Ca 2 Nd 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 , Pu‐doped ZrSiO 4 , and natural ZrSiO 4 minerals results in the simultaneous accumulation of point defects and amorphous regions that both contribute to the macroscopic swelling. A composite model for the macroscopic swelling is used to determine the amorphous fraction…

Polystyrene chemistry affects vitronectin activity: An explanation for cell attachment to tissue culture polystyrene but not to unmodified polystyrene

John G. Steele、B. A. Dalton、Graham Johnson 等 4 位作者1993-07-01Journal of Biomedical Materials Research

Tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS) supports good attachment of adherent cells whereas unmodified polystyrene (PS) does not, but the mechanism of this difference is not well characterized. We have compared TCPS and PS for the amounts of vitronectin (Vn) and fibronectin (Fn) which adsorb from the fetal bovine serum (FBS)…

Catalytic oxidation of CO on Pt(335): A study of the active site

Jiazhan Xu、John T. Yates1993-07-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The catalytic reaction CO(a)+O(a)→CO2(g) has been studied on Pt(335) using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and temperature programmed reaction (TPR) methods. Both dissociative O2 adsorption and CO adsorption occur preferentially on the step sites. It has been found that chemisorbed CO on the (111) t…

Nonlinear analysis of buoyant convection in binary solidification with application to channel formation

Gustav Amberg、G. M. Homsy1993-07-01Journal of Fluid Mechanics

We consider the problem of nonlinear thermal-solutal convection in the mushy zone accompanying unstable directional solidification of binary systems. Attention is focused on possible nonlinear mechanisms of chimney formation leading to the occurrence of freckles in solid castings, and in particular the coupling betwee…

Effect of Grain Growth of β‐Silicon Nitride on Strength, Weibull Modulus, and Fracture Toughness

Naoto Hirosaki、Yoshio Akimune、Mamoru Mitomo1993-07-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

β‐Si 3 N 4 powder containing 1 mol% of equimolar Y 2 O 3 –Nd 2 O 3 was gas‐pressure sintered at 2000°C for 2 h (SN2), 4 h (SN4), and 8 h (SN8) in 30‐MPa nitrogen gas. These materials had a microstructure of “ in‐situ composites” as a result of exaggerated grain growth of some β Si 3 N 4 grains during firing. Growth of…

Green Phosphors for Large Plasma TV Screens

A. Morell、N. El Khiati1993-07-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

Zn 2 − x Mn x SiO 4 is an efficient phosphor for plasma display panels. However, it is not usable for TV applications because of its too long decay around 30 ms. In this study, we have investigated the decrease of the decay time of Zn 2 − x Mn x SiO 4 phosphors synthesized by solid‐state reaction. Photoluminescence de…
