We report here a simple strategy for the synthesis of wire/ribbon-like polypyrrole nanostructures using lamellar inorganic/organic mesostructures as templates which were formed during polymerization between surfactant cations and oxidising anions and which were degraded automatically after polymerization.

Fabrication of Sr-Doped LaFeO[sub 3] YSZ Composite Cathodes

Yingyi Huang、John M. Vohs、Raymond J. Gorte2004-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

Composites of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with Sr-doped (LSF) were studied for application as high-performance cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The composites were formed by aqueous impregnation of porous YSZ with La, Sr, and Fe salts, followed by calcination at various temperatures. X-ray diffraction…

Switching of molecular second-order polarisability in solution

Inge Asselberghs、Koen Clays、A. Persoons 等 5 位作者2004-01-01Journal of Materials Chemistry

Second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) polarisabilities or first hyperpolarisabilities, β, of molecules may be manipulated by reversibly modifying the properties of specific parts of active molecules, usually by on/off switching. This may involve reducing the donor capacity of the electron-rich fragment of a typical don…

Quantum chemistry-based interpretations on the lowest triplet state of luminescent lanthanides complexes. Part 1. Relation between the triplet state energy of hydroxamate complexes and their luminescence properties

F.A. Gutierrez、Christine Tedeschi、Laurent Maron 等 8 位作者2004-01-01Dalton Transactions

In this paper, we evaluate the potential use of theoretical calculations to obtain an energy scale of the lowest ligand-centred triplet excited state in luminescent terbium(III) complexes. In these complexes, non-radiative deactivation of the terbium emitting state via a back-energy transfer process (T1<--Tb(5D4)) is…

Super-hydrophobic and super-wetting surfaces: Analytical potential?

Glen McHale、Neil J. Shirtcliffe、Michael I. Newton2004-01-01The Analyst

Roughening or texturing surfaces provides super-liquid repellent or film forming properties without alteration of the surface chemistry. These surfaces are easy to produce, can amplify wetting properties and can be either “sticky” or “slippy” to liquids. Their use as water-repellent coatings is established, but their…

The Effect of Rheological Parameters on the Ballistic Properties of Shear Thickening Fluid (STF)-Kevlar Composites

Eric D. Wetzel2004-01-01AIP conference proceedings

The addition of colloidal shear thickening fluids (STFs) to Kevlar fabrics has been shown to enhance the ballistic penetration resistance of the fabric, under conditions of low velocities and small target sizes. It is believed that this improvement in ballistic properties is related to the resistance of the STF to def…

Use of nondegenerate resonant leaky modes to fashion diverse optical spectra

Y. Ding、Robert Magnusson2004-01-01Optics Express

In this paper, we show that bandstop and bandpass filters with versatile spectral attributes can be implemented with modulated films possessing asymmetric grating profiles. The profile asymmetry breaks the resonant leaky mode degeneracy at normal incidence thereby permitting precise spectral spacing of interacting lea…

Light-induced motions in azobenzene-containing polymers

Cristina Cojocariu、P. Rochon2004-01-01Pure and Applied Chemistry

Abstract The following article is a tribute to the late Almeria Natansohn and is based on a brief summary of her research in azopolymers. She showed that reversible trans–cis–trans photoisomerization of aromatic azo groups covalently bonded within polymers could trigger a variety of motions in the polymer materials at…

Diffusion Studies of Copper on Ruthenium Thin Film

Raymond Chan、Tiruchirapalli Arunagiri、Y. Zhang 等 7 位作者2004-01-01Electrochemical and Solid-State Letters

Diffusion studies were carried out on physical vapor deposited Cu/Ru(∼20 nm)/Si samples using secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Back side SIMS depth profiling revealed well-defined interfaces and showed that Cu interdiffusion was impeded by Ru thin film up to 450°C vacu…

Plasticizers for Zein: Their Effect on Tensile Properties and Water Absorption of Zein Films

John W. Lawton2004-01-01Cereal Chemistry

ABSTRACT Cast zein films are brittle at room conditions, so plasticizers are added to make them more flexible. The tensile properties of these films are known to be affected by the relative humidity (RH) of the ambient air. However, little is known about how the plasticizers are affected by RH. Cast zein films were pl…

Sonochemical synthesis of aragonite-type calcium carbonate with different morphologies

Gen‐Tao Zhou、Jimmy C. Yu、Xinchen Wang 等 4 位作者2004-01-01New Journal of Chemistry

Aragonite, a high-pressure polymorph of CaCO3, was synthesized for the first time from simple Ca(HCO3)2 solutions by using high-power ultrasound irradiation. XRD, FT-IR and SEM techniques were used to characterize the phase composition and morphology of the products. The intensity of the ultrasound irradiation was fou…

The biocompatibility and biodegradation rate of component materials are critical when designing a drug-delivery device. The degradation products and rate of degradation may play important roles in determining the local cellular response to the implanted material. In this study, we investigated the biocompatibility and…
