Preparation and Characterization of an 8.4 Å Hydrate of Kaolinite

Jim Tunney、Christian Detellier1994-08-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract A stable 8.4 Å hydrate of kaolinite was prepared by exchanging ethylene glycol for water in the 10.8 Å intercalate of ethylene glycol in kaolinite. The hydrate of kaolinite was characterized by XRD, FTIR and TGA/DSC. From the TGA data, one can estimate that there is 0.60 water molecule per Al 2 Si 2 O 5 (OH)…

Optical Monitoring of Laser-Induced Plasma Derived from Graphite and Characterization of the Deposited Carbon Film

Yasuo Iida、Edward S. Yeung1994-08-01Applied Spectroscopy

Mechanisms of the deposition of carbon thin films by the laser ablation of graphite were investigated by monitoring the plasma emission. Parameters such as electron density, ionization temperature, and vibrational temperature during plasma growth were evaluated as a function of the laser power density and the surround…

Metal and Ligand Oxidation States in Dioxolene Complexes: Meaning, Assignment and Control

Antonı́n Vlček1994-08-01Comments on Inorganic Chemistry

Many features of the structural, magnetochemical, spectral, electrochemical, and chemical behavior of transition metal complexes with redox-active dioxolene ligands indicate that most of them are valence-localized species with well defined and experimentally distinguishable metal- and dioxolene-oxidation states. The v…

Effect of Network Modifier on Spontaneous Emission Probabilities of Er 3+ in Oxide Glasses

Hiromichi Takebe、Yoshikazu Nageno、Kenji Morinaga1994-08-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Compositional dependence of spontaneous emission probabilities of Er 3+ was studied for silicate, borate, and phosphate glasses using the Judd–Ofelt theory. Through all of the glass systems, spontaneous emission probabilities of the 4 I 13/2 → 4 I 15/29 → 4 I 9/2 → 4 I J , and 4 S 3/2 → 4 I J ( J = 9/2, 11/2,13/2,15/2…

Impact modification of engineering thermoplastics

Hiroyuki Kanai、Vince J. Sullivan、A. Auerbach1994-08-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Impact modification was studied for a variety of engineering thermoplastics to determine if notched Izod data obtained at various temperatures and modifier concentrations could be correlated with particle size or surface‐to‐surface interparticle distance of the modifier. Elastomers evaluated were characterist…

Hydrogen Embrittlement of Cathodically Protected High-Strength, Low-Alloy Steels Exposed to Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria

Michael J. Robinson、P.J. Kilgallon1994-08-01CORROSION

Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of two high-strength, low-alloy steels was studied in conditions typical of the marine environment. Double-cantilever beam specimens, heat-treated to produce the microstructure in the heat-affected zone of a weld, were tested in seawater containing sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) at a range…

Kenny Ståhl、Jonathan C. Hanson1994-08-01Journal of Applied Crystallography

The high intensity of an X-ray synchrotron source in combination with a curved position-sensitive detector covering 120° (CPS120 by INEL) has been used to collect complete powder diffraction patterns, suitable for Rietveld analyses, within minutes. From consecutive patterns (ΔT ≃ 5 K), detailed information was obtaine…

Polarization aberrations 1 Rotationally symmetric optical systems

James P. McGuire、Russell A. Chipman1994-08-01Applied Optics

The polarization in isotropic radially symmetric lens and mirror systems in the paraxial approximation is examined. Polarized aberrations are variations in the phase, amplitude, and polarization state of the electromagnetic field across the exit pupil. Some are dependent on the incident polarization state and some are…

Abstract The pyrolysis of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was examined with a thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA). The experiments were carried out over the temperature range of 400‐800 K at three heating rates of 1, 2, and 5.5 K/min and in a nitrogen atmosphere. The results indicate that the entire process of PVC pyrolysis u…

Electric-field effects on the spin-density wave in magnetic ferroelectrics

Amelia Carolina Sparavigna、A. Strigazzi、А. К. Звездин1994-08-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

A profound analogy exists between the modulate structures in magnetic materials and in nematic liquid crystals, especially for the behavior in an external field. Starting from this point, we study the influence of an electric field on the spatially modulated spin structure (spin-density-wave state) of the magnetic fer…
