Alexandra Deeke、Tom Sleutels、Tim F. W. Donkers 等 6 位作者2014-12-16Environmental Science & Technology

The use of granular electrodes in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) is attractive because granules provide a cost-effective way to create a high electrode surface area, which is essential to achieve high current and power densities. Here, we show a novel reactor design based on capacitive granules: the fluidized capacitive…

Quantitative Determination of Ligand Densities on Nanomaterials by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Marco D. Torelli、Rebecca A. Putans、Yizheng Tan 等 6 位作者2014-12-16ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a nearly universal method for quantitative characterization of both organic and inorganic layers on surfaces. When applied to nanoparticles, the analysis is complicated by the strong curvature of the surface and by the fact that the electron attenuation length can be comparabl…

Photo-Oxidation of Water on Defective Hematite(0001)

Manh‐Thuong Nguyen、Simone Piccinin、Nicola Seriani 等 4 位作者2014-12-16ACS Catalysis

Defects are unavoidable and usually originate exotic properties in realistic materials. One of the most fundamental defect-induced properties of a solid surface is its reactivity to adsorbed species. Defects in anodes of electrochemical cells for water splitting could therefore play a critical role in the interatomic…

Synergistic Concurrent Enhancement of Charge Generation, Dissociation, and Transport in Organic Solar Cells with Plasmonic Metal–Carbon Nanotube Hybrids

Ju Min Lee、Joonwon Lim、Nayeun Lee 等 10 位作者2014-12-16Advanced Materials

Plasmonic nanostructures are synthesized by decorating B- or N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with Au nanoparticles. While the plasmonic nanoparticles promote exciton generation and dissociation, the B- and N-doped CNTs enable charge-selective transport enhancement in the organic active layer. Such concurrent enhanceme…

Is Ice Nucleation from Supercooled Water Insensitive to Surface Roughness?

James M. Campbell、Fiona C. Meldrum、Hugo K. Christenson2014-12-16The Journal of Physical Chemistry C

There is much evidence that nucleation of liquid droplets from vapor as well as nucleation of crystals from both solution and vapor occurs preferentially in surface defects such as pits and grooves. In the case of nucleation of solid from liquid (freezing) the situation is much less clear-cut. We have therefore carrie…
