Organic chemistry was originally considered to be the chemistry of living things; organic chemicals came from plants and animals, while inorganic ones came from rocks. However, the discovery of the conversion of ammonium isocyanate, on heating, into urea (Figure 1.1) rst connected the whole of chemistry together. e s…

Electrospinning allows the production of nanofibers with diameters down to the range of a few nanometers. Self‐assembly processes driven by the coulomb interactions between charged elements of the fluids to be spun and their interactions with the external electrical field control nanofiber formation. Electrospinning i…

Polyolefin is a group of polymers produced from chemically unsaturated CnH2n as a monomer. Two of the simplest members are polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). PE is a readily crystallized thermoplastic. It is available commercially in three major grades: low, high, and ultrahigh (ultrahigh-molecular-weight polye…

Discoveries do not arise out of nothing. Each new theory or experimental result has its own background and recognizing the achievements of predecessors is a sign of scientific professionalism. On the other hand, discoveries do not take place ‘according to plan’. They are always unexpected. For example, Christopher Col…
