Thermal Evolution of Hydrogen Following Water Adsorption on Defective UO2(100)

J. Stultz、Mark T. Paffett、Stephen A. Joyce2004-01-22The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

The evolution of molecular hydrogen from UO 2 (100) surfaces exposed to water vapor has been studied using temperature programmed desorption. No hydrogen evolution is observed from well-annealed, pristine surfaces. Significant amounts of hydrogen, however, desorb from highly defected, ion-sputtered surfaces at ∼400 K.…

An automated in vitro protein folding screen applied to a human dynactin subunit

Christoph Scheich、F. Niesen、Robert Seckler 等 4 位作者2004-01-22Protein Science

The preparation of proteins for structural and functional analysis using the Escherichia coli expression system is often hampered by the formation of insoluble intracellular protein aggregates (inclusion bodies). Transferring those proteins into their native states by in vitro protein folding requires screening for th…

Supercontraction Stress in Spider Webs

K. Savage、Paul A. Guerette、John M. Gosline2004-01-22Biomacromolecules

Silk produced from the major ampullate (MA) gland supercontracts when wet, and in this paper, we investigate the consequences of high humidity and of the added load of water droplets condensing from saturated air on the mechanical integrity of the spiders' orb web. We measured the development of the supercontraction s…

Rou-Jane Liu、Peter A. Crozier、Charlene M. Smith 等 6 位作者2004-01-22Microscopy and Microanalysis

Sintering of a palladium catalyst supported on alumina (Al2O3) in an oxidizing environment was studied by in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the case of a fresh catalyst, sintering of Pd particles on an alumina surface in a 500 mTorr steam environment happened via traditional ripening or migration and…

Francesco Fusaro、Marco Mazzotti、Gerhard Muhrer2004-01-22Crystal Growth & Design

Paracetamol was precipitated from solution in acetone using compressed carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) as an antisolvent in a batch gas antisolvent (GAS) recrystallization process. In this study, the effect of specific carbon dioxide addition rate (0.067−6.0 min -1 ), temperature (5−40 °C), relative solute concentration in ace…

Tarık Eren、Seli̇m H. Küsefoǧlu2004-01-22Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract The ene reaction between plant oil triglycerides (such as soybean and sunflower oils) and paraformaldehyde was used to introduce a homoallylic hydroxyl functionality on the triglyceride. Paraformaldehyde and triglyceride were reacted in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, ethylaluminum dichloride, and hydr…

Molecular dynamic simulation of the hydration and diffusion of chloride ions from bulk water to polypyrrole matrix

J. J. López Cascales、Toribio F. Otero2004-01-22The Journal of Chemical Physics

A molecular dynamic simulation of wet polypyrrole film was carried out, in both oxidized and reduced state. The system was modeled by two layers of polypyrrole, water and chloride ions (as counterions required for charge balance in the oxidized state) in atomic detail to provide an insight into some dynamic and steady…

Lysozyme Adsorption Studies at the Silica/Water Interface Using Dual Polarization Interferometry

Jian R. Lu、Marcus J. Swann、Louise L Peel 等 4 位作者2004-01-22Langmuir

Lysozyme adsorption at the silica/water interface has been studied using a new analytical technique called dual polarization interferometry. This laboratory-based technique allows the build up or removal of molecular layers adsorbing or reacting on a lightly doped silicon dioxide (silica) surface to be measured in ter…

Swelling Inhibition by Polyglycols in Montmorillonite Dispersions

Shangying Liu、Xiaogang Mo、Chunguang Zhang 等 5 位作者2004-01-22Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology

In this study the inhibition by polyglycols of the swelling of montmorillonite in aqueous solutions was investigated through linear swelling and particle size distribution experiments. With addition of KCl, polyglycol adsorbing on montmorillonite can complex with K+ and promote clay particles aggregation and efficient…

Cooperative Dynamics in Two Dimensions

Ronen Zangi、Stuart A. Rice2004-01-22Physical Review Letters

We report results from molecular dynamics simulations of cooperative motion in a quasi-two-dimensional system of colloid particles. We find that the onset of the deviation of the single-particle displacement distribution from Gaussian form starts in the liquid phase and extends, with increasing magnitude, through the…

Advanced Electron Microscopy Characterization of Nanostructured Heterogeneous Catalysts

Jingyue Liu2004-01-22Microscopy and Microanalysis

Heterogeneous catalysis is one of the oldest nanosciences. Although model catalysts can be designed, synthesized, and, to a certain degree, characterized, industrial heterogeneous catalysts are often chemically and physically complex systems that have been developed through many years of catalytic art, technology, and…

First principles study of the solubility of Zr in Al

Emmanuel Clouet、Juan-Miguel Sanchez、Christophe Sigli2004-01-22arXiv

The experimental solubility limit of Zr in Al is well-known. Al3Zr has a stable structure DO23 and a metastable one L12. Consequently there is a metastable solubility limit for which only few experimental data are available. The purpose of this study is to obtain by ab-initio calculations the solubility limit of Zr in…
