Non-linear permittivity study of the crossover from ferroelectric to relaxor and cluster glass in BaTi1−xSnxO3 (x = 0.175–0.30)

W. Kleemann、S. Miga、Z. Xu 等 5 位作者2014-05-05Applied Physics Letters

The electric susceptibilities χ1, χ2, and χ3 of BaTi1−xSnxO3 ceramics with 0.175 ≤ x ≤ 0.30 are measured at 90 ≤ T ≤ 350 K and 37 ≤ f ≤ 106 Hz. Crossover from ferroelectric (x = 0.175) to relaxor behavior (x = 0.30) via coexistence of both (x = 0.25) is indicated by increasing polydispersivity and suppression of χ2 in…

CeO 2 Nanocrystals from Supercritical Alcohols: New Opportunities for Versatile Functionalizations?

Cédric Slostowski、Samuel Marre、Odile Babot 等 5 位作者2014-05-05Langmuir

The fast and controlled synthesis of surface-modified cerium oxide nanoparticles was carried out in supercritical {ethanol + alcohol derivative} mixtures. The newly found ability of supercritical alcohols to graft onto cerium oxide nanocrystals (CeO2 NCs) during their synthesis was exploited to control their surface c…

Propagating phase interface with intermediate interfacial phase: Phase field approach

Kasra Momeni、Valery I. Levitas2014-05-05Physical Review B

An advanced three-phase phase field approach (PFA) is suggested for a nonequilibrium phase interface that contains an intermediate phase, in particular, a solid-solid interface with a nanometer-sized intermediate melt (IM). A thermodynamic potential in the polar order parameters is developed that satisfies all thermod…

Optimization of Cell Adhesion on Mg Based Implant Materials by Pre-Incubation under Cell Culture Conditions

Regine Willumeit‐Römer、Anneke Möhring、Frank Feyerabend2014-05-05International Journal of Molecular Sciences

Magnesium based implants could revolutionize applications where orthopedic implants such as nails, screws or bone plates are used because they are load bearing and degrade over time. This prevents a second surgery to remove conventional implants. To improve the biocompatibility we studied here if and for how long a pr…

Modulation of over 1014 cm−2 electrons in SrTiO3/GdTiO3 heterostructures

Mohamed Seghir Boucherit、Omor Shoron、Clayton Jackson 等 8 位作者2014-05-05Applied Physics Letters

We demonstrate charge modulation of over 1014 cm−2 electrons in a two-dimensional electron gas formed in SrTiO3/GdTiO3 inverted heterostructure field-effect transistors. Increased charge modulation was achieved by reducing the effect of interfacial region capacitances through thick SrTiO3 cap layers. Transport and dev…

Vibration-induced Wenzel-Cassie wetting transition on microstructured hydrophobic surfaces

Wei Lei、Zhi-hai Jia、Jichang He 等 5 位作者2014-05-05Applied Physics Letters

Wetting transitions were studied with vertically vibrated droplet on various polydimethylsiloxane surfaces with square array of pillars. Our experiments show that the increase of the pillar spacing, at each given frequency, leads to a decrease of the critical amplitude (which is required to achieve a Wenzel to Cassie…

Effects of Stone-Wales and vacancy defects in atomic-scale friction on defective graphite

Xiaoyu Sun、Runni Wu、Re Xia 等 5 位作者2014-05-05Applied Physics Letters

Graphite is an excellent solid lubricant for surface coating, but its performance is significantly weakened by the vacancy or Stone-Wales (SW) defect. This study uses molecular dynamics simulations to explore the frictional behavior of a diamond tip sliding over a graphite which contains a single defect or stacked def…

Indirect-direct band gap transition through electric tuning in bilayer MoS2

Z. Y. Zhang、M. S. Si、Yanting Wang 等 7 位作者2014-05-05The Journal of Chemical Physics

We investigate the electronic properties of bilayer MoS2 exposed to an external electric field by using first-principles calculations. It is found that a larger interlayer distance, referring to that by standard density functional theory (DFT) with respect to that by DFT with empirical dispersion corrections, makes in…

Effect of As-chain layers in CaFeAs2

Xianxin Wu、Congcong Le、Yi Liang 等 6 位作者2014-05-05Physical Review B

The recently discovered iron-based superconductors have chainlike As layers. These layers generate an additional three-dimensional hole pocket and conelike electron pockets. The former is attributed to the Ca $d$ and As1 ${p}_{z}$ orbitals and the latter are attributed to the anisotropic Dirac cone, contributed by As1…

Structural Isomers of Ti2O4 and Zr2O4 Anions Identified by Slow Photoelectron Velocity-Map Imaging Spectroscopy

Jongjin B. Kim、Marissa L. Weichman、Daniel M. Neumark2014-05-05Journal of the American Chemical Society

High-resolution anion photoelectron spectra are reported for the group 4 metal dioxide clusters Ti2O4(-) and Zr2O4(-). Slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging (SEVI) spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled, mass-selected anions yields photoelectron spectra with submillielectronvolt resolution, revealing extensive and wel…

Bifacial Peptide Nucleic Acid as an Allosteric Switch for Aptamer and Ribozyme Function

Xin Xia、Xijun Piao、Dennis Bong2014-05-05Journal of the American Chemical Society

We demonstrate herein that bifacial peptide nucleic acid (bPNA) hybrid triplexes functionally substitute for duplex DNA or RNA. Structure-function loss in three non-coding nucleic acids was inflicted by replacement of a duplex stem with unstructured oligo-T/U strands, which are bPNA binding sites. Functional rescue wa…
