A Thermodynamic Understanding of Clay‐Swelling Inhibition by Potassium Ions

Xiandong Liu、Xiancai Lu2006-08-25Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Caged: Potassium ions are trapped in coordination cages composed of surface hexagons and water molecules in a smectite interlayer (see picture; blue K, red O, white H). This microstructure leads to a striking stability of the single-layer K-smectite hydrate and inhibits further swelling of the clay.

Boron-Doped Carbon Nanotubes Serving as a Novel Chemical Sensor for Formaldehyde

Ruoxi Wang、Dongju Zhang、Yuemei Zhang 等 4 位作者2006-08-25The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

To search for a novel sensor to detect the presence of formaldehyde (HCOH), we investigate reactivities of the intrinsic and boron-doped (B-doped) single-walled (8, 0) carbon nanotube (SWCNT) with HCOH using density functional theory calculations. Compared with the intrinsic SWCNT, the B-doped SWCNT presents high sens…

Comment on " Low-Lying Quasiparticle States and Hidden Collective Charge Instabilities in Parent Cobaltate Superconductors"

I. I. Mazin、M. D. Johannes、G. A. Sawatzky2006-08-25arXiv

Qian et al [1] recently reported angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements for Na0.8CoO2 that show two concentric Fermi surfaces (FS) split by a delta k_F that varies by a factor of three around the Brillouin zone (BZ). The surfaces occupy 70+/-5% of the full 2D BZ and were interpreted as the bo…

We have investigated intrinsic point defects in ZnO and extended this study to Li, Cu and Al impurity centres. Atomic and electronic structures as well as defect energies have been obtained for the main oxidation states of all defects using our embedded cluster hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical approach t…

The design of a thermal rectifier

Michel Peyrard2006-08-25arXiv

The idea that one can build a solid-state device that lets heat flow more easily in one way than in the other, forming a heat valve, is counter-intuitive. However the design of a thermal rectifier can be easily understood from the basic laws of heat conduction. Here we show how it can be done. This analysis exhibits s…

Melting of alloys along the inter-phase boundaries in eutectic and peritectic systems

Efim A. Brener、D. E. Temkin2006-08-25arXiv

We discuss a simple model of the melting kinetics along the solid-solid interface in eutectic and peritectic systems. The process is controlled by the diffusion inside the liquid phase and the existence of a triple junction is crucial for the velocity selection problem. Using the lubrication approximation for the diff…

Large Nonlinear Kerr Angle in non-Centrosymmetric Fe/AlGaAs (001)Heterostructure

Haibin Zhao、Diyar Talbayev、Gunter Luepke 等 6 位作者2006-08-25arXiv

A large nonlinear magneto-optical effect is observed in a non-centrosymmetric Fe/AlGaAs (001) heterostructure. This effect is a direct consequence of interference between second-harmonic optical waves of magnetic and crystallographic origin, generated at ferromagnetic Fe interface and bulk AlGaAs, respectively. The lo…

Magnetically Mediated Transparent Conductors:In2O3Doped with Mo

Julia E. Medvedeva2006-08-25Physical Review Letters

First-principles band structure investigations of the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of Mo-doped In2O3 reveal the vital role of magnetic interactions in determining both the electrical conductivity and the Burstein-Moss shift which governs optical absorption. We demonstrate the advantages of the transiti…

Collective modes and skyrmion excitations in grapheneSU(4)quantum Hall ferromagnets

Kun Yang、S. Das Sarma、A. H. MacDonald2006-08-25Physical Review B

Graphene exhibits quantum Hall ferromagnetism in which an approximate $SU(4)$ symmetry involving spin and valley degrees of freedom is spontaneously broken. We construct a set of integer and fractional quantum Hall states that break the $SU(4)$ spin (valley) symmetry, and study their neutral and charged excitations. S…

It is shown that the abnormal long-range Te-Te intermolecular interaction in TeO(2) crystals may be related to the tunneling of electrons from the 5s(2) active lone pairs of Te(4+) ions and their partial delocalization on neighboring Te(4+).
