The common house spider alters the material and mechanical properties of cobweb silk in response to different prey

Cecilia Boutry、Todd A. Blackledge2008-07-23Journal of Experimental Zoology Part A Ecological Genetics and Physiology

Many spiders depend upon webs to capture prey. Web function results from architecture and mechanical performance of the silk. We hypothesized that the common house spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, would alter the mechanical performance of its cobweb in response to different prey by varying the structural and material…

Bradley F. Habenicht、Oleg N. Kalugin、Oleg V. Prezhdo2008-07-23Nano Letters

Vibrational dephasing of the lowest energy electronic excitations in the perfect (16,16) graphene nanoribbon (GNR) and those with the C2-bond insertion and rotation defects is studied with ab initio molecular dynamics. Compared to single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of similar size, GNRs shows very different prope…

Synthesis and Characterization of a Cationic Poly(β-hydroxyalkanoate)

Jeff Sparks、Carmen Scholz2008-07-23Biomacromolecules

Poly(beta-hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) are biodegradable polyesters produced by a wide range of bacteria. The structures of these polymers may be tuned by controlling the carbon source composition in the feed stock, but the range of functional groups accessible in this manner is limited to those that the organism is able…

Wideband two-port beam splitter of a binary fused-silica phase grating

Bo Wang、Changhe Zhou、Jijun Feng 等 5 位作者2008-07-23Applied Optics

The usual beam splitter of multilayer-coated film with a wideband spectrum is not easy to achieve. We describe the realization of a wideband transmission two-port beam splitter based on a binary fused-silica phase grating. To achieve high efficiency and equality in the diffracted 0th and -1st orders, the grating profi…

Rapid Synthesis of Polyethylenimine-Protected Prussian Blue Nanocubes through a Thermal Process

Junfeng Zhai、Yueming Zhai、Liang Wang 等 4 位作者2008-07-23Inorganic Chemistry

Polyethylenimine (PEI)-protected Prussian blue nanocubes have been simply synthesized by heating an acidic mixture of PEI, FeCl 3, K 3Fe(CN) 6, and KCl. The experiment results presented here demonstrate that the pH of the mixture plays an important role in controlling the shape and composition of the resultant product.

Superhydrophobic Surfaces from Various Polypropylenes

Romain Rioboo、M. Voué、A. Vaillant 等 8 位作者2008-07-23Langmuir

Superhydrophobic surfaces were prepared from solutions of isotactic polypropylenes of various molecular weights using soft chemistry. Varying the conditions of the experiments (polymer concentration and initial amount of the coated solution) allowed us to optimize the superhydrophobic behavior of the polymer film. Res…

Formation and diffusion of oxygen-vacancy pairs on TiO2(110)-(1×1)

Xuefeng Cui、Bing Wang、Zhuo Wang 等 7 位作者2008-07-23The Journal of Chemical Physics

We present the measurements for the diffusion of bridging oxygen vacancy (OV) crossover Ti rows via OV pairs (OVPs). Using a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscope (STM), we show that the OVs can be moved along the bridging oxygen rows driven by the STM tip at voltages higher than 3.0 V on TiO(2)(110)-(1x1) sur…

Cross-Linking of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes with Polymeric Amines

Youchun Zhang、Antonius A. Broekhuis、Marc C. A. Stuart 等 7 位作者2008-07-23Macromolecules

Functionalization of carbon nanotubes is considered as an essential step to enable their manipulation and application in potential end-use products. In this paper we introduce a new approach to functionalize multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by applying an amidation-type grafting reaction with amino-functionalized…

Effect of crystal-field splitting and interband hybridization on the metal-insulator transitions of strongly correlated systems

A. I. Poteryaev、Michel Ferrero、Antoine Georges 等 4 位作者2008-07-23Physical Review B

We investigate a quarter-filled two-band Hubbard model involving a crystal-field splitting, which lifts the orbital degeneracy as well as an interorbital hopping (interband hybridization). Both terms are relevant to the realistic description of correlated materials such as transition-metal oxides. The nature of the Mo…

Liquid-Liquid Interfacial Tension of Electrolyte Solutions

Markus Bier、Jos W. Zwanikken、René van Roij2008-07-23Physical Review Letters

It is theoretically shown that the excess liquid-liquid interfacial tension between two electrolyte solutions as a function of the ionic strength I behaves asymptotically as O(-sqrt[I]) for small I and as O(+/-I) for large I. The former regime is dominated by the electrostatic potential due to an unequal partitioning…
