Scanning electron microscopy studies of polymer melt devolatilization

Ramon J. Albalák、Zehev Tadmor、Yeshayahu Talmon1987-05-01AIChE Journal

Abstract The devolatilization mechanism of polystyrene was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Strands of molten polystryene, containing 2,300 ppm styrene, and molten polystyrene containing 5% pentane, were extruded into a heated vacuum chamber. The strands were abruptly frozen, then fractured under liquid nitrog…

Development of Thermal Plutonium Recycling

H. Roepenack、Fritz U. Schlemmer、G. Schlosser1987-05-01Nuclear Technology

Thermal plutonium recycling has been demonstrated by Kraftwerk Union AG/Alkem on a large scale since 1972 in power plants at Obrigheim and Gundremmingen, Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). An improved mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel fabrication technology has been available since 1981. Such improved MOX fuel is currently being…

Mesomorphic Behaviour of N-4-hexadecylpyridinium Chloride

R. Somashekar1987-05-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

In this paper we report the mesomorphic behaviour of anhydrous N-4-hexadecylpyridinium chloride (HDPCI). DTA, X-ray and optical studies show that HDPCI exhibits smectic A phase above 76°C. Existence of lamellar phase in the mixtures of HDPCI and water, is reported using X-ray and optical studies.

Donata Catalano、Claudia Forte、Carlo Alberto Veracini 等 5 位作者1987-05-01Liquid Crystals

The orientational order parameters have been measured by deuteron N.M.R. of both solute (at low dilution) and solvent in various binary mixtures involving the liquid crystal 4,4′-di-n-heptylazoxybenzene (HAB). The solutes studied were azoxybenzene-d10 and n-heptylbenzene-d7 which are fragments of HAB, azobenzene-d 10…

Formation and Transformation of WO 3 Prepared from Alkoxide

Osamu Yamaguchi、Daijo Tomihisa、Hidenao Kawabata 等 4 位作者1987-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Amorphous WO 3 or WO 3 or H 2 O is formed by hydrolysis of tungsten ethoxide. The temperature of hydrolysis influences the crystallization of WO 3 ·H 2 O. Tungsten hydrate (WO 3 ·H 2 O) has an orthorhombic unit cell with a=0.5235 nm, b = 1.0688 nm, and c=0.5123 nm. Orthorhombic WO 3 crystallizes at 350° to 500°Cfrom a…

Aliphatic polyurethane elastomers with high performance properties

Janice W. Dieter、Catherine A. Byrne1987-05-01Polymer Engineering and Science

Abstract A new diisocyanate, 1,4‐eyclohexane diisocyanate (CHDI), has been used in a series of polyether‐based polyurethane elastomers. The slightly opaque samples are semicrystalline in nature with high performance properties, including high softening temperature, very good thermal stability, high tensile and tear st…

Electric Field Induced Phase Transitions in Liquid-Crystalline Blue Phases

F. Porsch、H. Stegemeyer1987-05-01Liquid Crystals

Voltage/temperature phase diagrams of liquid-crystalline blue phase (BP) systems CB 15/M 18 and CB 15/E 9 have been determined by means of polarizing microscopy. Above a certain threshold voltage a field-induced BP occurs which is stable in a region of the U/T diagram between the BPI and BPII.

Fluid dynamical effects of polymers adsorbed to spherical particles

John L. Anderson、Jeenok T. Kim1987-05-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The effects of adsorbed macromolecules (polymers) on certain transport coefficients of spherical particles are determined using methods of matched asymptotic expansions to solve the Stokes flow equations within and outside the polymer layer. The main advantage of this analysis is that it allows direct substitution of…

A new crystal structure of pure cobalt formed in ultrafine particles

S. Kajiwara、Shûichi Ohno、Kazuhiro Honma 等 4 位作者1987-05-01Philosophical Magazine Letters

A long-period stacking structure of 9R, which has the stacking order ABC/BCA/CAB, has been found in ultrafine cobalt particles 20–500 nm in diameter. The structure seems to have resulted from the martensitic transformation of f.c.c. cobalt on cooling to room temperature. Electron microscopy reveals the existence of he…
