국민생활 수준의 향상으로 내수시장이 확대되어 현재 우리나라의 자동차 등록대수는 1,950만 여대에 이른다. 이로 인하여 폐자동차의 발생량도 지금까지 일시적인 감소를 제외하고는 꾸준히 증가하여, 2013년에는 77만 여대가 발생하였다. 이중 일부는 중고 차로서 수출되고 대부분은 해체되어 재활용 대상이 된다. 폐자동차의 해체공정을 살펴 보면, 최초 해체업자에게 인도되어 유용 부품이 회수된 후, 압축하여 슈레더 업체로 옮겨지며 이렇게 압축된 차량을 press body라고 한다.
