Shear-Induced Melting and Reentrance: A Model

Rangan Lahiri、Sriraṁ Ramaswamy1994-08-15Physical Review Letters

A simple two-variable model for the dynamics of sheared colloidal crystals gives shear-melting at low shear rates and suggests a novel mechanism for recrystallization to the solid phase at high shear rates. The nonequilibrium phase diagram agrees qualitatively with experiments and molecular dynamics simulations.

Film drops produced by air bubbles bursting at the surface of seawater

Jin Wu1994-08-15Journal of Geophysical Research Atmospheres

By taking together various observations on air bubbles bursting at the surface of seawater, the production rate and size spectrum of film drops are deduced. The number of film drops produced is proportional to the square of bubble diameter, and the size spectrum of film drops produced by bubbles of various diameters i…

A. Carl、G. Dumpich、E.F. Wassermann1994-08-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We report on structural and electrical properties of thin granular ${\mathrm{Pd}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{C}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$ films with palladium (Pd) metal volume fractions 0.3x0.34, approaching the percolation threshold (${\mathit{x}}_{\mathit{p}}$=0.3) from the metallic side. As revealed from…

Discrete fluctuators and broadband noise in the charge-density wave inNbSe3

I. Bloom、A. C. Marley、M. B. Weissman1994-08-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

In small samples of ${\mathrm{NbSe}}_{3}$ the broadband noise of the sliding charge-density wave (CDW) can be partially resolved into two-state and multistate fluctuators, which show strong sensitivity to the bias current and temperature. Explicit violations of detailed balance appear. Near the threshold bias for slid…

Conversion of fullerenes to diamond under high pressure and high temperature

Yanzhang Ma、Guangtian Zou、Haibin Yang 等 4 位作者1994-08-15Applied Physics Letters

Fullerenes have been converted to diamond crystals with the size of 0.1 mm at 5.0–5.5 GPa and 1400 °C, using NiMnCo catalyst. They are similar to graphite in the growing phenomena. They are transformed into diamond directly without being graphitized first.

Low-energy electron-energy-loss spectroscopy of solid films of argon: Surface and bulk valence excitons

M. Michaud、Léon Sanche1994-08-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We report high-resolution electron-energy-loss (HREEL) spectra at low energy (0--20 eV) on solid multilayer films of Ar. The present results are compared with optical data of similarly deposited films as well as with electron-energy-loss spectroscopy of Ar in the gas phase. Relatively wide and intense bands located at…

Endohedral adsorption in graphitic nanotubules

J. Bretón、Javier González‐Platas、C. Giŗardet1994-08-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

Calculations based on simple interaction potentials are performed to define the adsorption characteristics of molecules encapsulated in carbon nanotubules. The continuum approximation used to describe the cylindrical sheets is shown to work fairly well within a large range of tubule diameters. Criteria for molecule co…

X-ray-photoemission spectroscopy and optical reflectivity of yttrium-stabilized zirconia

P. Camagni、G. Samoggia、L. Sangaletti 等 5 位作者1994-08-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and optical measurements have been performed to investigate the structure of electronic states in yttrium-stabilized zirconia. From reflectivity observations, the spectral behavior of the dielectric function, of the energy loss, and of the effective electron number in the range 3…

Range of forces on host-metal atoms around interstitial hydrogen in Pd and Nb

Ch. Elsässer、M. Fähnle、L. Schimmele 等 5 位作者1994-08-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Forces on the host-metal atoms surrounding a hydrogen atom at different interstitial positions in palladium and niobium are calculated from first principles in the local-density approximation with a mixed-basis pseudopotential supercell approach. For supercells ${\mathrm{Pd}}_{\mathit{n}}$H (n=1,4,8,16,32) previously…

Lattice-gas model mimicking the NO+CO reaction on Pt(100)

Baoqi Meng、W. H. Weinberg、James W. Evans1994-08-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

Various NO-reduction reactions on Pt(100) exhibit similar dynamical behavior, presumably due to an empty site requirement for NO dissociation. This motivates analysis of a lattice-gas model which incorporates this feature, and which here is chosen to mimic the NO+CO reaction on Pt(100): both reactants adsorb at single…

Electrical Transports of LaFe1-xTixO3(x≤0.10)

E. Iguchi、Woo Hwan Jung1994-08-15Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

Electrical transports of LaFe 1- x Ti x O 3 ( x ≤0.10) containing ligand holes (3 d 5 L ) were investigated by dielectric properties, ac and dc conductivities. A dielectric relaxation peak appeared with the activation energy which increased from 0.49 eV to 0.56 eV with increasing the amount of Ti ions. A thermal activ…

Theory of the dispersion of ultrafast nonlinear refraction in zinc-blende semiconductors below the band edge

D. C. Hutchings、B. S. Wherrett1994-08-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The dispersion of the nonlinear refractive index of direct-gap semiconductors, over the full sub-band-gap spectral region, is determined within the four-band Kane model. The divergences of individual terms in the nonlinear susceptibility, which have prevented previous full calculations, are avoided by selecting suitab…

Electron emission from chemical vapor deposited diamond and dielectric breakdown

J. Shovlin、Martin E. Kordesch1994-08-15Applied Physics Letters

After coating with a smooth, nonreactive, sputtered gold layer, previously nonemitting chemical vapor deposited diamond films are observed to emit electrons in an applied field of 30–50 kV/cm in an electron emission microscope. The gold overlayer increases the effective field strength applied to the film. The conseque…

Angular distribution of electrons reflected elastically from noncrystalline solid surfaces

Wolfgang Werner、I.S. Tilinin、Markus Hayek1994-08-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The elastic backscattering of medium-energy (200--2000 eV) electrons from noncrystalline materials has been investigated experimentally, theoretically, and with a Monte Carlo (MC) technique. A theory for elastic electron backscattering has been developed. In this theory, single scattering events are treated exactly wh…

Possibility of Li-Mg and Al-Mg hydrides being metallic

Bernd Pfrommer、Ch. Elsässer、M. Fähnle1994-08-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Within the framework of the local-density approximation and the ab initio pseudopotential theory, it is shown that alloying of ${\mathrm{MgH}}_{2}$ with Li or Al may be described in terms of the rigid-band model. Metallization of insulating ${\mathrm{MgH}}_{2}$ upon doping with Li or Al should therefore be possible. D…

Surface-induced ordering in block copolymer melts

G. Brown、Amitabha Chakrabarti1994-08-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

Surface-induced ordering in block copolymer melts is studied numerically. For symmetric copolymers, the thickness of the surface-enrichment layer is found to scale as Req∼Nθ with θ≊0.6, suggesting the system is undergoing a surface-induced strong segregation. The density profile perpendicular to the interacting surfac…
