The scattered electron energy-loss spectrum due to the excitation of the 4p 5 n 1 l 1 n 2 l 2 states in rubidium atoms was measured at 25.6 eV impact energy. New optically forbidden non-autoionizing states located between 16.5 and 16.8 eV were observed.

The transmission of electrons through a tapered glass capillary was observed for 1000 eV incident electrons up to tilt angles of ~9.5°. Tilt angle dependence of the energy loss broadening shows clear correspondence of elastic and inelastic processes. Both were found for smaller tilt angles.

Absolute total cross sections for electron scattering from He and Ne at electron energies ranging from 6 meV to 20 eV were obtained with the experimental technique employing the threshold-photoelectron source.
