Abstract The effects of various drying techniques, such as air, oven, freeze, and spray drying, on the morphological, thermal, and structural behaviors of two different nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) materials were investigated. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) observations indicated an interlaced…

It is known that there is a correlation between a cell membrane potential and the proliferation of the cell. The high proliferation capacity of liver cells can also be attributed to its specific cell membrane potential as liver cell is recognized as one of the most depolarized of all differentiated cells. We hypothesi…

Hemicelluloses were produced from pear pomace using direct alkaline extraction (sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide) and two-step extraction with delignification pre-treatment (acidified sodium chlorite/sodium hydroxide). The aim of the study was to compare the extraction yield, composition and physicochemical char…

Graphene films prepared by heating the SiC(000-1) surface (the C-face of the {0001} surfaces) in a Si-rich environment are studied using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM). Upon graphitization, an interface with rt(43) x rt(43)-R7.6 degree symmetry is observed by in situ L…

We study the tunneling of conduction electrons through a (110)-oriented single-barrier heterostructure grown from III-V semiconductor compounds. It is shown that, due to low spatial symmetry of such a barrier, the tunneling current through the barrier leads to an electron spin polarization. The inverse effect, generat…

We apply quantum rate theory to calculate the transition rates as hydrogen or deuterium atoms escape from a vacancy trap in iron into a neighbouring metastable site. We determine transition rates and corresponding activation energies over a wide range of temperatures covering both the quantum and classically dominated…

Several years back Angliker et al [Chem. Phys. Lett. 1982, 87, 208] predicted nonacene to be the first linear acene with the triplet state $1^{3}B_{2u}$ as the ground state, instead of the singlet $1^{1}A_{g}$ state. However, contrary to that prediction, in a recent experimental work Tönshoff and Bettinger [ Angew. Ch…

The experiments have been carried out using the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect in perpendicular circular and axial magnetic field. There were two schemes of the experiments, depending on the combination of magnetic fields: • transverse Kerr effect at sweeping of circular field HCIR-AC, which was produced by an…

Optical effects that demonstrate the influence of the magnetization on the state of light are known as magneto-optical effects. Two main magneto-optical phenomena are usually distinguished: the Faraday effect and the Kerr effect. The Faraday effect is characterized by the rotation of the polarization plane and the cha…
