The results of two types of experiments on electrochromic (poly)crystalline films of rf sputtered WO3 are presented as additional new evidence that the behavior (especially scattering) of the free electrons plays a dominant role in the electrochromic properties of such films.

The electrochemical properties of solid films of Mt‐2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24‐octacyanophthalocyanine 2 were studied by cyclic voltammetry in aqueous electrolytes. The thin (10–100 nm) film electrodes show remarkably stable electrochromic redox behavior, and the charge exchanged in the cathodic and anodic waves, respective…

Abstract The applicability of 27 Al and 29 Si magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MASNMR) spectroscopy to the investigation of order-disorder in 1 : 1 dioctahedral layer-silicates was tested. 27 Al and 29 Si MASNMR showed the existence of short-range order in all these systems while XRD showed different d…

Three dimensions of human comfort with respect to clothing are proposed: physical, psychological, and social comfort. A pilot study of 60 women, aged 60 to 80, was conducted to develop and test a semantic differential measure of these three human comfort dimensions with respect to actual and ideal insulative clothing…

It is found that, far above the ferroelectric transition temperature, Tc, certain ferroelectric systems show a temperature dependent index of refraction, n(T), that is qualitatively different from ordinary ferroelectrics. We review measurements in these systems and show how some aspects of this n(T) data can be quanti…

Although notched specimens have been much used in studies of hydrogen embrittlement, precracked–specimen testing has become more widespread in the last 15 years or so. However, recent work has revived interest in the use of notched specimens for fundamental studies. The background for, and recent results from, the use…

Boron carbide compacts sintered between 2220° and 2250° C showed abnormal grain growth that was associated with twinning and microcracking. The twin direction was 〈011〉. The microcracking was linked to thermal expansion anisotropy determined by high‐temperature lattice constant measurement.

Since the Curie temperature (Tc) of R-Fe-B permanent magnets is lower than conventional 1/5 and 2/17 magnets, the irreversible loss due to the change of coercivity is critical when considering their application. The simple way to guarantee the thermal properties is to raise the coercivity at room temperature. The effe…
