Thermal conductivity of sputtered oxide films

Seung Min Lee、David G. Cahill、Thomas H. Allen1995-07-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The thermal conductivity of oxide thin films deposited using dc, rf, and ion-beam sputtering is measured in the temperature range 80--400 K using the 3\ensuremath{\omega} method. Thermal conductivity data for amorphous thin films of ${\mathrm{SiO}}_{2}$ are nearly identical to bulk a-${\mathrm{SiO}}_{2}$. Data for amo…

Identification of Different Modes of Molecular Motion in Polymers That Cause Thermorheological Complexity

K. L. Ngai、D. J. Plazek1995-07-01OpenAlex

Abstract The viscoelastic properties of amorphous polymers are reviewed with emphasis on the glass to rubber dispersion (often referred to as the transition zone). Deviations from thermorheologieal simplicity (where molecular retardation and relaxation mechanisms have the same temperature dependence) are identified. M…

Chimie Douce Approaches to the Synthesis of Metastable Oxide Materials

J. Gopalakrishnan1995-07-01OpenAlex

While thermodynamically stable metal oxides and other solids could be prepared by conventional high-temperature (ceramic) methods, syntheses of the more important metastable oxide materials of current interest, such as the zeolites and other microporous solids as well as layered and framework oxides of various kinds r…

Geometrical percolation threshold of overlapping ellipsoids

Edward J. Garboczi、Kenneth A. Snyder、Jack F. Douglas 等 4 位作者1995-07-01OpenAlex

A recurrent problem in materials science is the prediction of the percolation threshold of suspensions and composites containing complex-shaped constituents. We consider an idealized material built up from freely overlapping objects randomly placed in a matrix, and numerically compute the geometrical percolation thres…

Structural and Magnetic Properties of Trigonal Iron

S. Fox、H. J. F. Jansen1995-06-30arXiv

First principles calculations of the electronic structure of trigonal iron were performed using density function theory. The results are used to predict lattice spacings, magnetic moments and elastic properties; these are in good agreement with experiment for both the bcc and fcc structures. We find however, that in e…

A Helical Polymer with a Cooperative Response to Chiral Information

Mark M. Green、Norman C. Peterson、Takahiro Sato 等 6 位作者1995-06-30OpenAlex

Polyisocyanates, long studied as theoretical models for wormlike chains in dilute solution and liquid crystals, differ from their biological helical analogs in the absence of a pre-determined helical sense. These polymers have an unusual sensitivity to chiral effects that arises from a structure in which alternating r…

Optical Switching and Image Storage by Means of Azobenzene Liquid-Crystal Films

Tomiki Ikeda、Osamu Tsutsumi1995-06-30OpenAlex

Liquid crystals are promising materials for optical switching and image storage because of their high resolution and sensitivity. Azobenzene liquid crystals (LCs) have been developed, in which azobenzene moieties play roles as both mesogens and photosensitive chromophores. Azobenzene LC films showed a nematic phase in…

Spin-polarization-induced structural selectivity in Pd$_3X$ and Pt$_3X$ ($X=3d$) compounds

Z. W. Lu、B. M. Klein、A. Zunger1995-06-29arXiv

Spin-polarization is known to lead to important {\it magnetic} and {\it optical} effects in open-shell atoms and elemental solids, but has rarely been implicated in controlling {\it structural} selectivity in compounds and alloys. Here we show that spin-polarized electronic structure calculations are crucial for predi…

Ab initio molecular dynamics simulation is used to investigate the structure and dynamics of liquid Se at temperatures of 870 and 1370~K. The calculated static structure factor is in excellent agreement with experimental data. The calculated radial distribution function gives a mean coordination number close to 2, but…

Growth and composition of covalent carbon nitride solids

Z. John Zhang、Shoushan Fan、Charles M. Lieber1995-06-26Applied Physics Letters

The composition, growth mechanism, and phases of carbon nitride thin films obtained from the reaction of laser ablated carbon and atomic nitrogen have been investigated. The nitrogen composition was found to increase to a limiting value of 50% as the fluence was decreased for laser ablation at both 532 nm and 248 nm.…
