Uniaxial Extension of End-Linked Polystyrene Networks Containing Deuterated Free Chains Studied by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering: Effect of the Network Chains and the Size of the Free Chains

A. Ramzi、A. Hakiki、J. Bastide 等 4 位作者1997-05-01Macromolecules

We have studied end-linked polystyrene networks containing labeled (deuterated) free chains subjected to an uniaxial deformation using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The networks are made by end-linking protonated polystyrene precursor chains of a narrow size distribution. As for statistical networks investiga…

Dyeing of silk with bifunctional reactive dyes: the relationship between exhaustion and fixation

Deepali Agarwal、Kushal Sen、M L Gulrajani1997-05-01Journal of the Society of Dyers and Colourists

The influence of dye reactivity on the exhaustion of reactive dyes on silk has been studied. It was found that if reactivity is reduced by blocking or hydrolysing the reactive groups, exhaustion also decreases. A mechanism by which reactive dyes exhaust onto silk in neutral media is also proposed.

Molecular analysis of the Rhodococcus sp. strain H1 her gene and characterization of its product, a heroin esterase, expressed in Escherichia coli

Deborah A. Rathbone、P.J.A. HOLT、Christopher R. Lowe 等 4 位作者1997-05-01Applied and Environmental Microbiology

The structural gene for heroin esterase was cloned from Rhodococcus sp. strain H1 and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). The purified enzyme was found to be a tetramer with an M(r) of 137,000 and an apparent K(m) of 0.88 mM for 6-acetylmorphine. The G-x-S-x-G motif was observed in the deduced amino acid sequence…

Interactions of Two Porphyrin Rings: Metal-Induced Structural Change of 5,5′-Ethylenebis(porphyrin)

Ken‐ichi Sugiura、Г. В. Пономарев、Satoshi Okubo 等 5 位作者1997-05-01Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan

Abstract 5,5′-Ethylenebis(octaethylporphyrin) 1 and its metallocomplexes with various combination of metals (Zn, Cu, and Ni) 2—10 were prepared. On the basis of 1H and 13C NMR as well as MCD spectra, it was concluded that interactions between the two intramolecular porphyrins become attractive when at least one of the…

ASSESSMENT OF WATER QUALITY USING EPIPHYTIC DIATOM ASSEMBLAGES ON CLADOPHORA FROM THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER (CANADA)

Jacqueline M O'Connell、Euan D. Reavie、John P. Smol1997-05-01Diatom Research

Diatoms epiphytic on Cladophora were examined from 36 sites in the Saint Lawrence River between Salaberry-de-Valleyfield and Ile d'Orleans (Quábec, Canada). A total of 129 diatom taxa were identified from Cladophora in June 1995, and of these, 34 species were present at a relative abundance ≥ 1% at three or more sites…

Simulating the Mechanical Properties of a Yarn Based on the Properties and Arrangement of its Fibers Part II: Results of Simulations

Lieva Van Langenhove1997-05-01Textile Research Journal

Part I established a theoretical model that was able to predict the stress-strain and torque-strain curves of a yarn. This second part evaluates the model. The influence of fiber and yarn parameters on the predicted values is also discussed. The most critical fiber property is the coefficient of friction.

Preliminary communication A novel class of heterocyclic liquid crystals with broad smectic C phase

Hong‐Cheu Lin、Long‐Li Lai、WEI PIN HSIEH 等 4 位作者1997-05-01Liquid Crystals

A successful approach in molecular design through fusing aromatic/heterocyclic rings for broadening the smectic C (SmC) phase and the synthesis of the first heterocyclic liquid crystalline (LC) molecules containing 3,7-disubstituted quinoline with one of the widest SmC phases are reported. Their naphthalene analogues…

Molecular-statistical description of the smectic-A–smectic-C phase transition

F. Gieβelmann、P. Zugenmaier1997-05-01Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

A simple molecular-statistical model of the smectic-A--smectic-C phase transition is proposed. Assuming a bilinear mean-field potential, the macroscopic tilt angle is calculated by Boltzmann statistics as a thermal average of the molecular tilt. The calculation leads to an equation of state for the smectic-C phase whi…

Synthesis and Characterization of Wholly Aromatic Polyesters Derived from 6-Hydroxy-5-phenyl-2-naphthoic Acid or 4‘-Hydroxy-3‘-phenylbiphenyl-4-carboxylic Acid and 4-Hydroxybenzoic Acid

S J Huh、Jung‐Il Jin1997-05-01Macromolecules

Two series of new, wholly aromatic copolyesters were prepared from 6-hydroxy-5-phenyl-2-naphthoic acid (HPNA) or 4‘-hydroxy-3‘-phenyl-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (HPBA) and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) in varying mole ratios. In addition to these copolyesters, the homopolyesters of 6-hydroxy-5-phenyl-2-naphthoic acid an…

Stabilization of tilt order by chain flexibility in Langmuir monolayers

Friederike Schmid1997-05-01Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

Langmuir monolayers are modeled as systems of short chains, which are confined to a planar surface at one end, but free to move within the plane. The phase behavior is calculated in a mean field approximation, which combines the self consistent field method with elements of classical density functional theory. It is s…

Titania as a Sintering Additive in Indium Oxide Ceramics

Nicolas Nadaud、Doh‐Yeon Kim、P. Boch1997-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The influence of TiO 2 additives on the sintering behavior of In 2 O 3 ceramics has been investigated. TiO 2 increases the densification rate, decreases the grain growth during the intermediate stage of sintering, and hinders the pore/boundary breakaway that can affect the final stage of sintering. For a given grain s…

Photo‐controlled diffusion in reacting liquid crystals: A new tool for the creation of complex molecular architectures

Dirk J. Broer、Johan Lub、G. N. Mol1997-05-01Macromolecular Symposia

Abstract Diffusion enforced photo‐assembling during polymerization of a chiralnematic monomer blend yields a cholesteric network in which the helical pitch gradually changes over the cross‐section of the film. The polarization selective reflection band of cholesterics can be made much wider than those of single pitch…

Edward H. Snell、Alberto Cassetta、John R. Helliwell 等 10 位作者1997-05-01Acta Crystallographica Section D Biological Crystallography

The protein apocrustacyanin C(1) has been crystallized by vapour diffusion in both microgravity (the NASA space shuttle USML-2 mission) and on the ground. Rocking width measurements were made on the crystals at the ESRF Swiss-Norwegian beamline using a high-resolution psi-circle diffractometer from the University of K…

Introduction

Lorna J. Gibson、Michael F. Ashby1997-05-01Cambridge University Press eBooks

Introduction and synopsis The word ‘cell’ derives from the Latin cella: a small compartment, an enclosed space. Our interest is in clusters of cells – to the Romans, cellarium, to us (less elegantly) cellular solids. By this we mean an assembly of cells with solid edges or faces, packed together so that they fill spac…
