Large-angle beam steering using all-optical liquid crystal spatial light modulators

Nelson V. Tabiryan、Sarik R. Nersisyan2004-06-18Applied Physics Letters

We have demonstrated operation of an all-optical liquid crystal (spatial light modulator) used for steering a laser beam over large angles. Continuous steering over ±12.4° is achieved, controlled by the power of an infrared pump beam; This is a very large steering angle for a nonmechanical nondiffractive system.

Carbon nanotube transistor optimization by chemical control of the nanotube–metal interface

Stéphane Auvray、Julien Borghetti、M. F. Goffman 等 7 位作者2004-06-18Applied Physics Letters

Most carbon nanotube transistors work as Schottky barrier transistors. We show that chemical treatment of operational p-type nanotube transistors by trifluoro-acetic acid (TFA) leads to the drastic improvement of all the key device parameters. This effect is due to the highly polar nature of the TFA molecule which, on…

Thickness effect of ferroelectric domain switching in epitaxial PbTiO3 thin films on Pt(001)/MgO(001)

Yong Kwan Kim、Sang Sub Kim、Hyunjung Shin 等 4 位作者2004-06-18Applied Physics Letters

Epitaxial PbTiO3 thin films of various thicknesses were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on Pt(001)/MgO(001) substrates. Their ferroelectric domain structures and switching behavior were then investigated mainly using scanning force microscopy as a function of film thickness. Direct evidence of a-domain switching w…

Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) technique has been utilized to study the evolution of domain structure with varying Pb(Zr,Ti)O3(PZT) thickness on GaN substrate. Sol-gel PZT films were deposited on the GaN∕sapphire substrate with PZT thickness of 100, 200, and 300nm. The films exhibit ferroelectric properties that…

Abstract Summary: A series of organic‐inorganic nanoparticles were synthesized by nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) of butyl acrylate initiated by a self‐assembled monolayer of an azo initiator. The azo initiator was immobilized on silica particles in the presence of a stable nitroxide radical, SG1 (an acyclic β…

Takeshi Morita、Y. Wagatsuma、Yasuo Cho 等 6 位作者2004-06-18Applied Physics Letters

Deposition of a hydrothermal method has a number of advantages; low deposition temperature, high-purity, deposition on a three-dimensional structure, and a large thickness. The present paper investigates the improvement of an epitaxial lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film deposited via hydrothermal synthesis. The c…

Compression of polyhedral graphite up to 43 GPa and x-ray diffraction study on elasticity and stability of the graphite phase

Atsuko Nakayama、Sumio Iijima、Yoshinori Koga 等 6 位作者2004-06-18Applied Physics Letters

The crystal structure of polyhedral graphite particles (“G balls”) has been investigated under pressure up to 43 GPa and at room temperature by x-ray powder diffraction measurements. The polyhedra maintain the graphite phase under pressure higher than 40 GPa. A 29% compression in volume at 43 GPa involves an unusual d…

Direct Thermal Fluorination of Single Wall Carbon Nanohorns

Yoshiyuki Hattori、Hirofumi Kanoh、Fujio Okino 等 8 位作者2004-06-18The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

Single wall carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) were fluorinated to form more attractive nanohorns that have characteristic structural and adsorptive properties. Nitrogen adsorption, XPS, and TEM studies elucidated the surface states and the morphologies of fluorinated SWNHs (F−SWNHs). The XPS results of F−SWNHs showed that the…
