植物油脂を基盤とするバイオプラスチックの研究動向を紹介する。大豆油や亜麻仁油のエポキシ化物を酸無水物と硬化させることで高性能ネットワークポリマーが創製された。また,エポキシ化植物油脂の硬化物をセルロース等のバイオフィラーと複合化することにより,油脂ポリマーの物性が向上した。ナイロンのモノマー合成に用いられるヒマシ油を原料とするポリウレタンフォーム用のポリオールが開発された。ヒマシ油を開始剤とする乳酸あるいはラクチドの重合により得られる分岐状ポリ乳酸はバイオプラスチック用の可塑剤や結晶核剤として作用する。
