To verify the performance of permeation-resistant cladding for tritium targets designed for a New Production Reactor Light-Water Reactor, a tritium test facility was designed, developed, fabricated, and certified. Testing is ongoing to verify the performance of reference-designed targets. Accurate measurements were ta…
A revised model for the corrosion behavior of pure chromium has been developed. This model applies to both polycrystals and single crystals. The model has been developed using results from polarization and impedance measurements. In the revised model, the observed diffusion controlled process has been ascribed to surf…
One of the most striking manifestations of instability in solid mechanics is the localization of shear strain into narrow bands during high speed, plastic deformations of metals. According to one theory, the formation of shear bands is attributed to effective strain-softening response, which results at high strain rat…
We show, using constant-pressure molecular-dynamics calculations, that the deviation from Arrhenius behavior in transport properties in the supercooled states of Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluids and soft-sphere (SS) systems starts to occur when the time scale for obtaining ergodicity starts to increase dramatically. The temp…

Photodoping kinetic studies of thin sample of Ag/GexS100−x (21≤x≤45) were made through optical transmission measurements. The initial photodoping rate increases with increasing S content, whereas the total amount of dissolved Ag shows a maximum around the stoichiometric composition GeS2. The results are similar to tho…
The preparation of a number of copper(II) complexes of β-diketones is described. Following the unexpected discovery of a smectic A phase in bis-[l-(4′-decylbiphenyl-4-yl)-3-(4′-fluorobiphenyi-4-yl)propane-l,3-dionato]copper(II), two series of novel copper(II) complexes were prepared; one series is based on l-biphenyl-…
Membrane-bound L-(+)-pantoyl lactone dehydrogenase, an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of ketopantoyl lactone from L-(+)-pantoyl lactone, was solubilized with Brij 35 and purified 78-fold to apparent homogeneity, with a 3.7% overall recovery, from Nocardia asteroides through purification procedures including succe…
The inhibition of the CO/H20/02 reaction by small quantities or HCl was studied in a high temperature, atmospheric pressure flow reactor at temperatures near 1000K. The initial species concentrations of the CO/H30/02; reaction bath were kept constant at about l%/0·6%/0·5% respectively, while the initial concentration…
Photosensitive polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) were prepared using the nematic mixture E-5 doped with 2 wt-% photochromic stilbene dye in a gelatin binder. The stilbene undergoes E-Z photoisomerization on irradiation. The change of the configuration of dopants perturbs the liquid-crystalline order and the cle…

Reaction‐bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) with little or no residual silicon was formed from laser‐synthesized silicon powders and N 2 , at low temperatures and in short times (<10 min at 1250°C, <1 h at 1150°C). The nitriding kinetics were studied with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Samples formed in the TGA fu…
The analysis of conformational transitions using limited proteolysis was carried out on a hyperthermophilic aspartate aminotransferase isolated from the archaebacterium Sulfolobus solfataricus, in comparison with pig cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase, a thoroughly studied mesophilic aminotransferase which shares ab…
We show that, due to the coupling between tilt (amplitude of the antisymmetric part of the font profile) and phase dynamics, the phenomenology of tilt domains of finite width proposed by Coullet et al. within the assumption of a subcritical homogeneous tilt bifurcation retains the same qualitative features when this b…
The analytic predictions from the Self-Consistent Field(SCF) theory for grafted polymer layers are compared in detail with the recent Monte Carlo simulations using the bond-fluctuation model. Quantities describing the equilibrium structure of the brush are derived from the SCF theory and compared with the Monte Carlo…
The extracellular elastase (33 kDa) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is synthesized as a 53.6 kDa preproenzyme containing a long, N-terminal propeptide. The free propeptide and the elastase precursor generated upon propeptide removal were isolated from P. aeruginosa cells and subjected to N-terminal amino acid sequence analy…

In this paper we provide a detailed description of the interaction of solutal convection and morphological instability in the presence of a model boundary-layer flow. We present a detailed investigation of the structure of the marginal surfaces in Rayleigh-number, Sekerka-number, Reynolds-number space associated with…
