Abstract A new synthesis route for β‐MgAl2C2 is presented. The synthesis of this carbide compound was based on a solid‐state metathesis reaction. The material was prepared at 900 °C from aluminium powder, MgCl2 and Li2C2. The reaction product was inspected by X‐ray powder diffraction and 13C NMR spectroscopy.
